  • For anyone wondering what might happen if we blow a game, I went back and looked at the last time we were ranked near this high, '06-'07.

In 06-07 we got as high as #8 in the Coaches' Poll and AP poll. That was week seven.

That same week we lost to both New Mexico and USC. We dropped to #16 in the Coaches' Poll and AP polls in week eight.

Maybe they forgive a loss here and there.

    • The longer we go before that loss, the more forgiving they will be.

I am hoping it comes some time next year.

The perceived SOS at that point in the season was very high. We had two road wins over Top 25 teams. Also those losses to UNM and USC would look better than any possible loss we might take the remainder of this regular season.

Pfft. I knew you were one of the people that hopes for losses.

Agreed. We had already beaten LSU and Syracuse at that point.

But I still think a loss in the Valley might drop us 6 or 7 spots. Not the end of the world, especially if we have time to build ourselves back up.

              • The poll drop after a loss would depend on the who and where. Indiana State can be really good at times. Losing to them there wouldn't be seen anywhere near the same as a loss to Evansville in Wichita. Of course if the Shockers lose to Evansville at home again this year I would agree that a top ten ranking is undeserved.

                • The polls are interesting in that they are based on perception, however they do not factor in future probabilities into current rankings. For example, if you asked all those that vote in the AP "do you think the Shockers will lose at least one game in the Valley?" 95% would probably say yes. However, if/when they lose that first game 95% of those polled will drop the Shocks down in ranking. Not saying this is a bad thing, as in the criminal justice system, you are innocent until proven guilty. Currently we are #6 until proven otherwise.

                  • [t's also not our fault few pollsters have noticed SLU is 13-2 and is REALLY good.

Do you think they might have noticed that both of SLU's losses came to teams that are cumulatively 30-0?

                    • The problem is that with the exception of Indiana State on the road, every single game from here on out would have to be considered a potential really bad loss. And the Indiana State game is a stretch. We just don't have enough really good wins to offset the really bad losses. Not really our fault, since no one wants to play during the non-conference, but it's the way it is in the sh*t-bag Valley. That's a lot of pressure.

                          1. At no point this season will we be ranked #1 or #2 even if we run the table. The only way is to win the title.
Like others have sort of alluded to, I think it 100% depends on what other teams. Obviously if someone like Arizona or Syracuse goes undefeated or has one loss it's going to be basically impossible to be #1. If everyone else loses a couple, I think we have a great shot.

It's going to be awesome just to have parentheses next to our name even if we don't achieve #1. I think some AP voter will go against the grain and throw us a bone if we stay undefeated. That will definitely be cool to see.

I wondered where your wife was getting that from, now I know.
Except she says it just a little different, " 6"? I'm not satisfied."

Are you kidding? We have Fred and Ron for 2 more years, Tekele for another. At this point I'm hoping we don't have a loss until sometime in 2016. John Wooden better watch out, Greg is coming for him.
