If we get to play UK, HCGM will have to throw the kitchen sink at that front line...

Rauno and Tevin had better be working defense and blocking out... we may em..

        • You mentioned Glass and I had to remember who that was. I can't decide if it's my favorite or least favorite thing about this team that we have guys we haven't seen/heard from in weeks that all of a sudden give us some much needed production (e.g. Zach Brown).

          • Bush gave us quality minutes against KU. He helped us get through Shaq's and Darious's foul trouble and didn't hurt us. He got out muscled by Lucas a couple of times on the glass, but otherwise handled himself very well. He is easily our best post at hedging on screens. I will say, however, against Indiana, he looked lost against their speed.

            • Recruiting a big for next year - at this stage of the recruiting process - is a huge gamble. It means one more player has to leave the program. Then there's the problem of getting the new big guy worked into the system. I don't think there's much of a possibility of finding an available post player in April who could be expected to be a better contributor next year than what's already on the roster.

Last year around this time we were all salivating over Stephen Hurt. Top-50 or -100 out of HS. JC AA. The "best big available anywhere". He did approximately nothing for KSU this year. That's the risk you take for signing a "can't miss" JuCo this spring.

With all Marshall's success with JuCo's, it's easy to forget Griskenas, Anacreon, and (possibly) Glass.

I think our posts for next year are already here - plus Hamilton - and I'm not expecting anything from Hamilton next year.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

              • I agree with Aargh that signing a big now needs to be a can't miss or not at all. As a fan, I have no interest in dismissing Nurger when he has three years to develop, just to get a JUCO that will need development too.

However, I think that while Hamilton hasn't shown post skills, an athletic 6-9, 220+ PF might be able to play some five for next year's team.

One year ago we had heard nothing but good things about Nurger.

If we were a Valley team hoping to end up in tne top half of the league, it might be OK to expect first-year players to be significant contributors. That's not where we're at.

If we were regularly recruiting top-20 or maybe top-50 recruits, we might expect production from them the first year for a top-10 (nationally) team. We're not recruiting those guys. We have to rely on experience and team chemistry to remain where we're at. That's 2 things first-year players in our system do not have.

It's not a good idea to count on a minute of production from a first-year player. If we get it, that's good. Don't be disappointed if players take a year or two to grow into the system and the rotation. VanVleet and Baker are exceptions. They're also perimeter players.

                      • Having a high-quality, experienced big man for Fred and Ron's senior seasons appears to be a pipe dream. Very unfortunate.

I agree. Marshall has a great track record developing players. I've said it often this year but I see the potential in Glass, Wamukota and Nurger. All three need to improve, some more than others. It will take a lot of work in the off season but none are lost causes in my mind.

And in fairness to Griskenas, didn't he have some injury issues that cut his career short and probably sapped his game when he was available?

Griskanas was not a total miss. He tore some tendons in his knee IIRC and didn't recover until late in his senior season. He plays ball overseas and is a star guard.

                            • Would it be possible for Rauno to redshirt next year? I haven't heard that mentioned, but it's an option, he really needs to do it, and it would reduce the number over by one.

Sounds like a good plan for all!

Redshirting would not reduce the number.
