As for Cold's statements comparing Ehimen and Stutz physical prowess, I would agree with the fact that Orukpe may be more physically intimidating, but Garrett was light years ahead of him with regards to basketball skill, which is what matters most, IMO.
Yeah, it doesn't look quite as nice on paper, but he did do some good stuff in that Tulsa game. I pulled up the Drake game though and its a little more in line with the idea. He had 4 points, 2 fouls, 6 rebounds and 4 blocks...in 12 minutes. :)

against SIU, 9 rebounds, 4 blocks in 22 min.

I think I found my favorite comparison on the season stat sheet. Stutz had 33 blocks on the season in 786 minutes. Orukpe had 30 blocks on the season in 243 minutes on the floor :) love it. On the other hand Stutz had one million points and rebounds and Orukpe couldn't win a spot on the floor unless there was foul trouble or a blowout. Obviously, you've gotta give it to Stutz. He was the man. I'm just excited to see what it looks like when Orukpe has to be on the floor a lot more.

By the way, since we have a Creighton fan onboard. Looks like GE had 57 blocks in 835 minutes.

Okay this season stat sheet is funny. Sorry CU, but McD apparently had 3 (as in THREE) blocks on the season...1117 minutes. No one on the CU roster had more than 8 (as in EIGHT) blocks on the SEASON. GE was the only one with his 57, which is great. Am I reading this right? hehe

    • Orupke

Did you guys actually see the Tulsa game. Stats don't tell the whole story. With Orupke under the basket, the opponents sometime don't even bother to go inside. Orupke made a big difference in that game.

Why talk about the Creighton game when you can talk about the last game of the season against Drake. Orupke had 4 or 5 blocks in that game & indeed, Drake frequently didn't bother to drive on him. We were sitting in the SW corner of the floor right behind the press line because it was my Class of 62, 50th anniversary celebration that week & the WSU Alumni Association put us there. It was really cool.

Also, I watched one of the early summer scrimmages at Koch Arena. I ended up talking to one of the WSU Assistant Coaches that night. He said something like "You are going to be very pleasantly surprised at how well Orupke is going to play this coming season. He knows he's going to be the starter". This coach also brought up Orupke's play in the Tulsa game. He said he was a big factor in that game when he was needed.

        • My memory may have been off a little. I looked at the play by play and I think that the score was 63-60 Shocks (It was only a 3 minute period) from when EO entered teh game until he was subbed in for. When EO left the game, it was 69-63. EO was the 5 and Ben Smith was the 4. Stutz and Hall were on the bench with foul problems. I think that the statisticians may have missed a block and they don't keep track of intimidated missed shots in the lane. But there were 2-3 times where we had layups and made 3 pt. shots on the break. I remember that I was concerned with both Hall and Stutz on the bench (we had already lost our lead), and he kept us in the game and in fact, we increased our lead. He wouldn't be a factor late in the game because he wasn't a good ft shooter. I wish you could have seen the game tape, because he was very good.

I remember the Tulsa game exactly how you do. It seemed like he and Ben Smith were HUGE in that game...and in the Drake game, we were just begging for them to try to drive it because it was starting to get funny. Also, thanks for the scrimmage info.

If he gets the same treatment up in Nebraska that Stutz got, he could very well be sitting for a majority of the game. However, he is faster than Stutz, stronger than stutz, has a longer wingspan than Stutz, and can jump much higher than Stutz. He's most likely smarter than Stutz as well considering his mathematical/engineering aptitude (but that hasn't translated into basketball IQ as of yet).

                ...
Uh, Mr. Stutz had the same problems with fouls against Creighton in Wichita.

Ultimately, you shouldn't be too upset with the foul calls in Omaha --- it got Stutz off the floor and WSU back into the lead....

                • Stutz being on the floor wasn't an issue. Getting in foul trouble for being less physical than some of his opponents is what was an issue.

That pretty much answers some of the questions some posters have had about the lineup.

Orukpe, Hall, Early, Williams, and Armstead. Early and Armsted still need to earn it, but those are pretty safe bets.

Very good defense but lots of questions on 1/2 court offense, namely shooting.

Call me crazy, but I think Armstead has already earned it.

                          • Coach usually favors the seniors - especially early in the season.

Creighton was only required to get back on D so they had someone to inbound the ball and someone to inbound it to. :)

                              • Haha in glad someone caught that info. After I posted it some other stuff came up, but I think its hilarious. It's like weird bad. I mean everyone kind of knew but when you really look at it, its fascinating. I was just trying to see how orukpes blocks stacked up with echenique-which I might add is promising to say the least-and I couldn't help but notice everyone else's performance...especially artino and mcfish. I would have guessed around 20 for both of them, but 3 and 8? 11 combined blocks in a seasons worth of minutes for two forwards? Granted, artino got his 8 in limited minutes but orukpe got 30 in the same amount of time. Love it
