Maybe some of the graveyard whistlers in here still trying to spin a winning hand for the Shox in this. The P64 hasn't left orbit yet, but they're definitely in the stratosphere. What remains will be glorified intramurals.

Basketball will suffer, but if we can get to the F4 in the Valley, we can do it in the depleted AAC. It won't be as easy, and we won't be able to lose much, but what's new? We've squandered the last couple easy NCAA invites anyway.

Memphis will be our Creighton and it will just be the two of us hammering away.

Now, if Memphis leaves to the MWC, we are TOTALLY ****ed.
Memphis will do whatever is necessary to get a Big XII invite. The same thing happened to them when all their rivals went into the Big East. They begged and pleaded for years until they got the invite. However, what killed them last time is killing them again. They play their basketball and football games off campus at rented facilities.

        Not anyone living in reality.

          • Big East goes to 16.

            Add:
            - WSU
            - SLU
            - Dayton
            - VCU
            - 5th school yet to be determined.

The new BE would have a seat at the table if the P5 broke off for their own tournament. That's the greatest chance to stay relevant, the way it looks like the pendulum is currently swinging.

            • If the BE wants to get to 16, and they want to add the best available. I think we are in that category.

So we got that going for us.

              • The names being thrown around as realistic candidates are absolutely gross from the basketball side. Gotta hope Aresco can pull some magic and/or get the buy in to pull a couple BB only schools

                • Talk is also that Memphis and SMU were discussed to be included but they felt scheduling with OU and Texas still in the league would be to difficult. So there is some expectation that they might expand again and pick up those two once OU/Texas officially leave.

That's a nightmare scenario for us

                  • Well shiz, was afraid this was going to happen. Wonder if we give the A10 a call. Big East seems like a stretch. If Memphis ever leaves, this conference is probably only marginally better than the MVC.

                        • Can we ask for a refund of our $2 mill entry fee? Probably not after losing to Marshall (the school) and Drake in the NCAA's. We haven't exactly brought much to the AAC.

With a depleted budget due to loss of ticket sales, sky-high travel costs for AAC contests, throw in the difficulty of recruiting top-150 players to a depleted league. IB and the WSU athletic department are facing some serious challenges. It's not easy to follow the Gonzaga nodel. Gonzaga is the only team to have done it in my lifetime, and I'm older than some dirt.

Look, I'm disappointed with the direction this is taking and certainly understand the frustration. However, the 8 with 3 AAC schools and BYU isn't in the same solar system as the MAC. 8 of those 12 are either ranked in the top 25 at the moment or receiving votes. That's 8 of the top 44 in the preseason poll including 2 ranked in the top 8. Meanwhile the MAC has one (1) team receiving votes.

There certainly is no Clemson, Bama, or tOSU among that group, but denying several quality football programs are amongst those 12 schools is disingenuous or uneducated.

Not surprisingly, you missed the point.

There are NO top end programs, nor will there be. There are some short term engines that could, with no sustainability. Indiana, a horrible program year in and year out, could compete for titles in that league. NOT in the B1G. I didn't say they were the MAC. There will be the 4, a BIG gap, this league, another gap then the rest. BUT, they will be with "the rest" and not the 4. That's all that matters. Just because, for instance, OSU wins the new Big 12 doesn't mean they are going to be considered with the ACC champ. They will be grouped in with Western Michigan.

Prestige wise and money wise. Remember when the Valley lost CU and then us? It's that, 1000 times worse.

                              • I have to believe that the endgame of this hyper Machiavellian realignment that has been going on for years and continuing with the departures of Texas and OU will be fewer overall fans and less popularity. We already have 1 NFL. The lilly is long gone from the rose on amateurism. What use to be festive Saturdays all over the country is down to about 32 towns hogging all of the exposure on a given weekend. The basketball will quickly diminish as well. It is so arrogant that the P-whatever thinks the fans of the left out schools care about them no matter what, The basketball tournament was the final link but it will be gone soon. That’s the next step.
