Yes, I agree that determination and will is different than a natural rebounding instinct, if such a thing exists. I think it's more likely that some players were taught the importance and fundamentals of rebounding at a younger age and therefore appear to have an innate ability by HS or college that in reality is just the result of years of training.

Of course height is something you're either born with or not and being taller is certainly an advantage when it comes to rebounding, even if not all tall players are necessarily better rebounders. Athletic abilities like quickness, leaping, timing are in large part things we are born with but those too can be improved through training.

If Mo puts the same time and effort into improving his rebounding that he did to improve his free throw shooting and offense this past offseason I have no doubt he can get better in that area. How much better? I don't know but anything would help. Will he do that? Again, I don't know. If he does great, if not, so be it.
I agree with you around Udeze & Chandler putting in the "Will/Determination" work, but you either have that instinct or you don't.

I remember an interview with X where he was asked what he did to lead the nation in rebounding.

His answer: Well, I be there, and when I see the ball, I grab it.

For him, it was just that easy.

X had an uncanny knack for ALWAYS being in the spot where the ball was going when it came off the rim.

WSU offensive efficiency is 3rd in the AAC, Defensive Efficiency is 4th. WSU is 1st IN NOT turning the ball over. Is an average offensive rebounding team, but sucks on rebounding on the defensive end. WSU offensive efficiency is mainly helped by being 1st in the conference in getting to the FT line. These all help negate the poor defensive rebounding and shooting.

This is worst 2pt/3pt shooting team since Randy Smithson was the coach (though the last 2 GGG teams are close). Also the worst defensive rebounding team in all of Kenpom documented years. GGG teams ranged on the defensive side from low 22.6% to 27.4% - this team is 33.5%.

If WSU hopes to finish 2nd (or even the top 4) then need to improve:

          1. Shooting %
          2. Defensive rebounding

On the bright side this team actually takes care of the ball better historically and is one of the better teams of getting to the line. If they can continue to be strong in these areas and make improvements in (1) and (2), who know what their ceiling will be. If they don't, things could get a little sporty.

That is what they call instinct, which is one of the top two key characteristics of a good-to-great rebounder.

Nice! Thanks SB. Didn't realize how high we ranked in those other categories you pointed out!!! Stay there and get our shooting and rebounding percentages better...we be dancing!!! I think. Hope!

Not what I said at all. I said individuals have developed significantly- almost always the mark of a great assistant. I’m saying while we have the emergence of several players, the team has not developed as a whole- which is on the shoulders of the head coach.

MU and IPBC didn’t play much last year because a) we had Jaime and b) 3G doesn’t let you play if you don’t play defense and rebound. These guys just aren’t that good but they are best we have right now. IPBC isn’t really even a post player. He has no post moves. When he gets the ball in the post he likes to back out and do a face up shot, that’s not a good sign. Somehow, some way, we need to get a real post player in here along with the development of Bilau.

Saw some decent block outs last night that lead to some guards getting boards. Don’t know that I hose make us an average rebounding team, but it’s something I hadn’t previously seen.

Dan, you continue to miss the point of last years comparisons. They averaged 1/2 of the minutes they are playing this year, and yet their rebounding averages are practically the same. Wouldn't logic say they would at least, double their output, if their minutes double?

I think the other part of that was 3G riding their ass and making rebounding the priority of them playing. We didn't need them to score last year, just give Jaime a breather and rebound the ball.

Maybe, but they should be good enough rebounders to where both of them average 4-6 rebounds a game minimum in 20 minutes of time per game. That 4 rebound number of course, includes free throws that are rebounded where they are next to the basket and just have to screen out their man. In some games, that's all the rebounds they get.

I know rebounding is important. And the fact that Coach IB has been assistant to Coach M, I know that rebounding is important to him too. But MU and IPBC are not carrying their weight. But the biggest weakness I see with this team is it failure to stop penetration to the basket by the other team.

There was a great article on DD and his defense in today news paper. But too bad the other players on this team do not seem to want to focus on defense. DD plays the minutes he plays even though he is not shooting like he normally does because he plays defense. I saw some hero ball in that game last night and it made me so mad I broke a small table at my place. Fuk that sht of coming over the half court line and jacking up a 3 point shot without running the offense. I say that 4 times. That is bullsht. Then that person doesn't hustle back on defense and lets his man go to the cup for a lay up or shooting free throws.

As you can tell I am still pissed. Go Shocks

while the team is winning, this type of basketball is hard to watch.
