one thing I can think of is PJ's lacksidasical pass in the 1st half that led to a easy layup for them. Take that away - - and we would have won. There were also other events throughout the game too, but that is one that stands out for me.

Who does he think he is taking those last second prayers? His defense is worse than anything, though. They try to hide it with a zone, but they can't. It's pretty sad. If anyone can explain Gal's effort on the defensive end, please explain it. As much as I can't take his offense, his defense is so much worse. He is too talented to be playing like this and costing us games.
You can go down the box score and and point out for each player the things they did wrong that "cost WSU" the game. And there was some defensives lapses by PJ and Matt B that Texas-Arl took advantage off.

For every little thing Gal does right, he does two things wrong. It's very frustrating.
The more and more I see WP in action, the more and more I see Craig Steven inside of him. And that's even stretching it. Sad, but true.
Anyone notice when Matt went out midway into the first half, our offense became non-existent? UTA promptly went on a 12-0 run to end the half.
Outside of Matt, our guard play is beyond weak. And I'm afraid to say, that isn't gonna help when Valley play comes.
If we're just gonna jack up threes all year, we'll be lucky to win 6 conference games.Deuces Valley.
... No really, deuces.

Matt caused his own problems by acting like a freshman after being mad about a call, getting a STUPID 2nd foul and taking himself out of the game when we had a chance to put some distance between us and them.
Gal is frustrating for the following reasons. He makes the same flippin mistakes over and over. He looks to the bench after every questionable decision looking for redemption. His release on his jump shot is as slow as anyone in D1. I can beat him on the dribble drive.
He will continue to play for the following reasons. We have no one else, period. He can score, bigtime. He can create, bigtime. He has a better understanding than anyone except when it comes to running sets. He tries very, very hard.
Matt has played well this season but he was overmatched tonight and that is just not going to change all season. They were a lot quicker than he is and those guys used him up. We need Clevin to transfer at semester.
News and Notes
This is not going to be a fun week of practice.
Some people say that was a bad team even though they were 7-0. Wrong. Experienced and tough and when they shoot like they did tonight (and I thought they could have been a lot better) they can beat a lot of teams.
Problems tonight that do not worry me long term. 11-18 FTs. We are better than that and the rest of the season will prove it. JT getting too fired up over a layup. Young man, that's what you are supposed to do. Let us cheer. GM will correct that. Taking bad 3 point shots. Getting little to nothing from MG and AE.
Problems tonight that DO worry me long term. We are so slow at guard it's not funny. We are more thin than slow, ouch.
Positives to take from the game. JT has a lot of upside. PJ showed how good he can be when he asserts himself. Only 8 turnovers. Amazing against that bunch. Offensive rebounding against their zone was super. 19 more shots, 10 more FT. Every other day in the next 10 years we are going to win games like that. We did a lot wrong, got almost nothing from our bench and still almost beat a 7-0 (now 8-0) team.
I've said it before and I'll say it again; we need Mantas or Aaron to break out for us to be successful longterm.
Our coach burns like I do and I love it. Lynn is the best fan in the world.
I expect to have a full roster in 7 days.
Did I mention this is not going to be a fun week of practice?

I didn't get to watch the game and was only able to listen to the first few minutes, but I can certainly tell what cost the Shockers the game and it wasn't officiating. 4-29 from 3 land. No team will win with that stat or should for that matter.

The most aggravating thing about this game was that we had so many ways to win it: Hit ONE more three, make two more free throws, get ONE of the two goaltending non-calls (I'm sorry, I really try not to hang things on refs, but that ball was sitting ON THE RIM on the first one), stop one of those bounce-pass entry post-scores, wave a turkey leg in front of #45, many ways we could have won that game.
But ... silver lining here ... this may have been a good loss for them. They've got eight days to pick apart everything that went wrong, and there is a LOT of material to cover. They're going to have to come to grips with having a plan B when the 3 just isn't falling, they've got to defend interior passes better, they've got to push it better in transition. Maybe the most incredible thing about the game is that we couldn't just run them off the floor with transition ball. Sometime between Tuesday and tonight, the Shockers forgot how to break a press, and with either #32 or #45 on the floor at all times, we should have been making them dry-heave on-court by the end of the game.
I don't agree with KC Shox 0.500 prediction - we know they can play much better than tonight, and we know that the mental breakdowns that happened tonight won't be a recurring problem on a Marshall team.
On the good side, P.J. really tried to put the team on his back near the end. 20-10, even in a losing effort is a fine performance.
Taz/Lutha - we're ya feeling me in the 118 nosebleeds tonight?

Originally posted by Shocker85Originally posted by AndShockWell I was really PO'd at UTA right after the game, but I've calmed down a bit. When you take $62,000 from a University and then come out with a win in front of 10,000 fans, go ahead and celebrate all you want, I know they haven't been "there" before, so why do they have to act like they have.
There's no one out there that can tell me the Shocks deserved any fate other than what they got tonight. You don't make baskets, you should lose. Selfish play and BAD shooting by everyone but PJ cost this team a W.

if that 3 point play was a foul
then that rediculous body contact on gal certainly was.
comes down to refs ready to end their night."Coach Marshall,We will be at Creighton at least 15 hours in advance!"
CGM--->"Hell yea, and we'll beat their ass."

1. Refs try to avoid a clock winding down whistle, which may affect the outcome of the game.
2. I wonder, if our former, wide open, 3 ball specialist is interested in returning for the spring semester. Would he be immediately elgible?
3. I wonder, if Dr. Wu has any remaining elgibility. If so, can he hit a 3 ball....at a higher clip than 13.7931035%.
4. When most shooters go cold, it gets in their head and the shot selection and form degrade. As ball after ball clanked off the rim, I could clearly see a change in shooting form. Gal was nursing the ball up there. Durley's ball was so far off line, it looked like golf shots gone bad. PJ's shot was getting more flat.
Great shooters have none of these problems. They may miss a number on consecutive shots, but they retain good selection and form. We do not have a great 3 ball shooter. He transferred. Fortunately, help is on the way.
5. I sit near the visitor's bench. After the first half, I overheard one of the Coach's pep talks to the players. This is what he said: "Those morons cannot hit a 3 ball, so we are going to pack it in. It will permit us to greatly reduce inside scoring, increase our rebounding performance and reduce their dribble penetration. Just leave them alone out there and this game is ours."
6. When Hatch was inserted into the game, I wonder what Coach Marshall had in mind. I wasn't opposed to it. I just thought it was odd.
7. I though Ellis look a little more comfortable last night. Not a great improvement, but better.
8. When Griskenas missed his first 3 ball, frustration was clearly shown on his face.
9. JT's drop and spin was a thing of beauty. The defender's jaw dropped about 6".
10. JT was 5-7 in the paint.
11. Gal cut his turnovers from 7 to 4.
12. I really like the way the team minimizes fouls and turnovers. Last night, the Shockers had a combined total of 21, which is outstanding.
13. We had one switch last night on Guignard that was just plain awful. PJ was one of the defenders and I am not sure, but Matt may have been the other defender. It occurred in the first half at the north end. Of course, Guignard knocked her down.
14. Unlike most posters and observers, I do not think UT-A is very good team. If they played as linebackers on the football team, I might think otherwise.
15. Coach Marshall says #3, Jermaine Griffin, is a pro prospect. You could not prove it by me. So, that tells you a lot about what I know about basketball.
16. Moffitt will be an enforcer for a crime organization some day. He is a rough customer.
