Gene Stephenson didn’t know much about Brian Green when the new Wichita State baseball skipper was hired.

The program he built was being turned over to a coach without Shocker ties, tasked with the challenge of returning WSU to the postseason for the first time since Stephenson was commanding the dugout a decade ago.

So the legendary Shocker baseball figure started doing his own research, reaching out to the rolodex of coaching connections he made throughout his lifetime in college baseball. One message that stuck out was from LSU head coach Jay Johnson.

“He sent me a note that this guy, Brian Green, is a steal,” said the 77-year-old Stephenson. “He’s an honest man, he’s a dynamic guy, he wants every day to be the best it can be. (Johnson) said there’s no downside to this one.

“And he wouldn’t lie to me because he knows I would come down to LSU and kick his (butt).”

“We raised all of the money to build this thing (Eck Stadium) and we built it and now look at it. We can’t fill it,” Stephenson said. “Why? I’ll tell you why, it’s because the community needs to know you’re going to play your (butts) off every time out and you’re going to have energy and play the game with excitement and joy. When you do that, people love you and you win games. And this team last year was devoid of that.

“I always hear, ‘You can’t get that kind of energy from kids today.’ Bull (crap). That’s a cop out. If you demand it from guys and they respect you, they’ll run through walls for you. Every day you have to build that trust in one another. And I think (Green) is going to be energetic and he’s going to get guys to play hard every day and he’s going to bring some attention to detail, which is something that we haven’t had that I would like to see.”

Seems like he didn’t think last year’s team didn’t have a great culture. There is a lot of evidence during and after the season that would agree.

Seemed pretty straightforward and positive to me.

I was expecting more from that article. The only names mentioned were GS, BK (WSU employee) and Tyler Weber (Armchair). While it's nice to hear GS's full support for the program, regardless of who is leading it, I would expect the others to be on board. It's hard to put much stock in things like "I keep hearing from coaches", and "the LSU coach said he's a steal". There are a lot of empty carbs in that article, but not much meat.

That said, I do hope other alumni are coming to support the hire and the vague praises from unidentified coaches are warranted.

The article could have said more maybe, but I took Kemnitz (who some probably write off because he is just an employee and would only be positive) to say that his "phone was ringing off the hook", by players asking him what he thought of the new hire. I would think that if Stephenson thinks positively of Green, Kemnitz and he have probably visited about the hire. No proof but GS certainly didn't have to say what he did.

For years the NCAA was in absolute terror that the P5 would withdraw from the NCAA and form their own governing body. That resulted in the NCAA doing just about anything and everything to benefit the P5 while trying to appear impartial.

The way things are going now, I wouldn't be surprised to see the NCAA sort of partner with the P5, and let (or mildly "force") everybody else to leave the NCAA and form their own governing body. The NCAA does seem to already be in a partnership with the P5.

Isn't this something like the third year in a row that the NCAA was going to have a ruling on KU's 5 Level 1 violations as soon as the spring semester was wrapped up? Then there was the 10-year investigation into UNC's sham classes that were ruled to be legal. The NCAA has become the property of the P5 and the bluebloods.

The direction things are going is that the P5 become the minor leagues for the NBA, NFL, and MLB, and everybody else becomes the minor leagues for the P5.

I actually has similar thoughts to that I had typed into my last post on this thread then but decided to delete those.

I was thinking the NCAA might spit into two separated divisions: The NPCAA and the NACAA, the National Professional Collegiate Athletic Association and the National Amateur Collegiate Athletic Association. Would be nice if the NPCAA schools would at least be required to pay financial compensation to any NACAA school for each player that transfers from the NACAA to the NPCAA. Not holding my breath on that one if this type of split every came to pass..

Hearing that top assistant and recruiting coordinator Jake Valentine will stay put with @wsucougarbsb. That's good news for the Cougars. Valentine is a good one.
