    • Not much doubt this is a quality addition, especially so late in the game. Hoping that solid frame turns into durability. Excited to see him take the mound this fall.

      • We saw what happens this year without a true #1 pitcher, and with our youth that had + arm talent. Next year will probably be another dose of young arm talent that is good but not quite ready for prime time consistency. Too late now, but I wish he would have kept Pelfrey and then, probably some of our best arm talent would have returned. Our pitching has struggled for the past 10 years, and imo, we were just about to turn the corner.

        Sigh.

        • So the Triple Huge signal was posted on Sunday evening.

This one was posted Monday afternoon:

Is another commitment announcement pending? Or is the a Tommy LaPour exclamation point.

That what was said every year for the last 10 years. Wait till next year. Rinse and repeat. This pitching staff last year was not that great, they were just one of the better of the worst pitching staff this program has had.

              • I still hold Mrs Bluma partly responsible for the demise of pitching at WSU...She only had three sons.Speaking of which what are the boys up to now days.

Remember the days SB Shock where we had all the quality pitching we needed (that should have been the hard part), yet our hitting was sputtering. Never understood how we couldn't recruit better offense during those years.

I mean we weren't "good ol days" good, but #27 in the country ERA and #18 in the country WHIP clearly shows we were getting there.

I never thought our pitching was nearly as close as this year. This past year, we had the best pitching depth in a long time. We didn’t have a #1 (Top Starter) Starter, nor a closer we could Always trust against Top 20 teams. However, we had several good starters (Candiotti, Tolle, and Adler), and a couple (Snead, Favors, and Miner) good relievers who on given days could compete against good hitting teams. Finally we had several strong recruits (Horn, Geraghty, and Austin Henry) who were ready to be big contributors. I also hadn’t given up on Bye.

ERA is kind of misleading stat. ERA says you don't hold a pitcher accountable of what happens after an error is made. Especially when WSU sucked in the field (ranked 232). They gave up a lot of unearned runs.

But that being said, WSU ended ranked 109, but their individual stats would suggest a much better finish. Something doesn't reconcile. I would suggest it depth of the staff (or lack of)

Tolle, Adler and Candiotti carried 51% of the innings. Had WHIP 1.27 and ERA of 4.06 and gave up 4.96 runs per 9 ip.

Rest of the staff had a WHIP of 1.44, ERA 4.86, but gave up a eye whopping 6.16 runs per 9ip.

You have a good feeling for next year. I have a bad feeling of how bad the pitching will be next spring. Experience is important for winning teams.

Yeah, I think that's right. We lacked depth. But we were definitely improved and definitely trending in the right direction for the first time in too long.

1 data point is not a trend. Might be a start of a trend, or it might be an outlier.

Again there has been plenty of statements from multiple sources including Pelfrey that there was players going to transfer regardless of who the staff was.

                              • Is this the new Shocker Baseball Director of Operations/Video/Analytics? Played for Wichita State in 2004 and 2005 looks like. Didn't play much in 2004. Was a regular at SS in 2005. Had an okay, but not great season. Transferred to Indiana in 2006.
