there are some bars where, if a woman isn't getting her butt patted a few times a night, that's a probloem. Those are referred to as "meat markets". They are known hook up bars. 50-year old guys better be flashing wads of money, because that's all they've got that the women in those bars want.

You won't find families going out to dinner showing up at those bars.

Some people posting in this thread seem to have formed their bar experience from only going to meat markets. If one's purpose for going to bars is to meet someone to spend the night with, then I can understand that, from that perspective, Jans was "just having a little fun".

The vast, vast majority of people who go to bars are not looking for a stranger to spend the night with.

I would infer from the email the alumnus sent that the touching was probably unwanted, along with Jans calling her a *****. Wouldn't you imagine that the BG staff would have thought this through, maybe gathered more than one piece of eyewitness testimony, before they fired him? I'd think so.

We're way off topic. Jans made a mistake, and he was punished for it.

All this talk of what defines "harassment" is irrelevant! If Jans was having consensual sex on the bar, and by all accounts the woman was LOVING it, he would be fired just the same. The issue here is is public behavior, not if he did or did not harass someone.

BTW, the sex on the bar thing is over the top i know, so no need to dissect the difference between public sex and just playing grab ass at the bar.

I really want to just leave this thread alone, but it's just really hard for me.

That's why Bowling Green investigated and questioned Jans and he then admitted to all counts against him. If you haven't already, go read the three page documented termination letter and it explains a few more details that some here have overlooked, I just don't feel like typing it all out.

Edit: and the emails between the family and AD make it pretty clear the family wasn't out for blood, in my opinion.

First, CJ signed an admission. Maybe people lie and embellish, but he admitted it.

Second, it is exactly because people lie and embellish that people need to take precautions to protect themselves. It's the exact reason a high school girls basketball coach should absolutely never drive one of his players home after practice. Don't give other people the opportunity to lie about your behavior. When you are in the public eye, it is all about perception. Even if it is all a lie, it is avoided by doing your business at home.

As for me not impressing you, that's fine. I can assure you my undergrad is not a liberal arts degree. I wasn't attempting to impress you. I was attempting to explain that I know what I'm talking about in regards to this issue.

I've never had to define sexual harassment a single time in all my credit hours at WSU, much less in multiple "courses" as you purport.

How do you know the touching done by CJ was unwelcome? In the video the 'victim' does nothing at all to infer that she was offended. Don't you think the average female touched in such a manner, but in an unwelcome context, would do something to indicate the touch was out-of-line? Again, all we have on this subject is a short video and the testimony of the video taker who later made it a point to make as much fuss about the situation as she/he possibly could.

There's is a notable amount of projection going on in this thread wherein the "sexual harassment" crowd is making some huge assumptions that those of us who have an alternate take here are somehow defending the behavior across all contexts of social norms. We are not.

Maybe she was shocked CJ touched her trunk. There is no universal rule on how one reacts to such behavior, or the time frame. Although 7 seconds gives us reason to make a reasonable judgement about CJ, but 7 seconds is not a fair time frame to judge the female on how much or little she reacted. Just sayin.

So is this some "seedy bar" like on Broadway or a bar/restaurant? I took it to be the latter because he went there for dinner and also there were other families there also (for example the family taking video).
