That works fine if you have a job where you make enough money to be able to make an itemized deduction. It doesn't work for those that are poor or disabled or retired on a fixed income..

No problem. If you have an adjusted taxable income below a certain amount, just have it come right off, dollar for dollar, any tax due. If no tax is due, which will probably be true, make it a refund. It can be added to all the other refunds and credits they get. Problem solved again.

That works. Just make it a refundable tax credit.

Maybe I need to repeat myself: You cannot apply for welfare without an ID.

Since welfare recipients (the poorest of the poor in our country) have IDs, then the point being made by the left is invalid.

This really isn't a response to you @ShockTalk:, but to the thread in general. Are you guys really going to make ANOTHER stupid tax law over a $15 to $20 piece of plastic in order to appease a false argument? In most states it's WAY less.

This is exactly the mentality that creeps into every aspect of politics and why government is never efficient. One side makes a case for something, the other makes several false arguments about the topic in order to protect some perceived advantage, then the other side has to come up with creative ideas to satisfy false arguments and you end up with the most stupid tax code on the planet.

Pay $15 to prove you are an American and live in the state you say you do. Vote if you want to. Use the state ID to buy beer and cigarettes. No tax deductions. Shut up.

              Poll tax my ass.

Did the President (again) promise to control the weather last night? What was John Kerry mumbling about? Has Iran given up their nuclear goals lately in a shift that I haven't heard about?

Afghanistan? Where are the death tallies the media stopped running in early 2009? I wonder what percentage (of the bravest that gave their lives serving this President that doesn't believe in them) President Obama has overseen? WHERE ARE THE NUMBERS??!!

All politicians are crooks and it doesnt mean two $%&$# what they say. They say what we all want to hear and do what they want.

I agree with Rocky Mountain Shock in that where is compromise and meeting in the middle for the better good of all? Politicians disgust me. Regardless of party. And I'm a registered Republican for anyone who is wondering.

Yeah, but what's harder to get? A welfare card or a voting card? If you are unable to travel to get your welfare card, you can have someone go downtown and get it for you as long as they have all your information, such as income and an ID. Try that to get an voting card. You can also use almost any kind of ID to get a welfare card. Try getting a voting card with only a library card as identification. You would think it should be harder to get a welfare card than a voting card, but it's not.

It's not a huge expense for middle income people or higher. We probably spent $15 a week just on snacks. For people on fixed income who need every single dollar just to survive (or to at least make it through the night on a full stomach), it's a big difference. They have a choice of paying $15 for an ID or having their 3 kids go to bed hungry.

I don't have any problem with the photo ID as long as there is no cost. I know Kansas gives out free IDs.

This is what you must believe to argue against voter ID.

I don't even know where to begin...

I'm BARELY above the poverty level so I understand what it's like to pinch pennies to try and feed myself and pay my bills. And ID would not be a huge expense. And it's not like you have to try and find the money for it every week/month/year. And if it comes down to feeding the kids or getting an ID, do whatever you feel is most important to you. If I were in that situation, the kids would be fed and I'd skip a couple of meals to pay for that ID. Or cut back on food for a bit. It's not that complex unless you're 400 pounds and don't want to stop eating. But then you've made your choice on what you feel is more important.
