They also don't have cell phones, but I guess I could let them borrow mine so they could do that. My dad sounded pretty disgusted with the whole situation at the DMV. If there are really long lines again, I am not sure he will have the patience do even do the cell phone thing if I give him my phone. He thinks the DMV is a joke. The DMV made him mad enough that if he did vote again he would never vote for Brownback again.
Well everyone certainly shares that sentiment when you have to wait 3 hours. Fortunately it's only once in your life.

Anyhow ... tell them to go down and get a concealed carry license instead! At least the three hour course is interesting, instead of just sitting there in the DMV doing nothing, and you get to shoot some lead in the process. :)

My Dad decided if she couldn't vote, he wouldn't either (they always do everything together). I was pretty stunned to find this out.

It is more than just the money (they are middle class, the money wasn't a problem). It was the hassle. My mom quit driving as her arthritis got worse about 10 years ago. My dad took my mom to the DMV to get a photo ID card this summer and after waiting for OVER 2 HOURS with no end in sight, gave up and went home.

I think they will try one more time before the general, but if there are still long lines at the DMV, my dad said they just won't vote again. He sounded pretty disgusted with the whole situation. I don't think my parents have ever missed an election in the last 50 years.

It really made me think about the people over 70. We take photo ID for granted but there are lot of people over 70 who always vote but no longer have a drivers license. Think about all of the people in nursing homes. The DMV really needs to get their act together. "wouibla couldlau buckla"We should not make it that big of a hassle to vote.
Ever hear of ADVANCE VOTING? You don't have to leave home, which probably would be safer for your parents and the mailman doesn't require and ID deliver the ballot right to your mailbox.

You now have to have a valid drivers license number to apply for an advance ballot (or provide a copy of some other valid ids). If I could talk my mom into getting a concealed carry permit that would take care of the problem. As was pointed out if you are going to wait for 3 hours or more anyway, at least you can be learning something and doing something constructive.

well, then I guess they got a decision to make. Go and stand in line or watch oprah. Hint, if you usually get to the DMV early when it opens that lines are usually manageable.

            Old people shouldn't drive.

            Or vote.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

I guess the new voter ID law is doing its job then.

Which DMV are they going to? If they don't want to wait in line, they can go to the one in Andover. The last time I went to the one at Twin Lakes, there was a long line. Then when I got up to the front, I found out you had to pay with cash. At least the one in Andover you can pay with a debit card unless they've changed it.

I actually didn't know there was one in Andover. I doubt if my parents knew about it either. They do live on the west side, but the drive to Andover would probably be worth it if they could avoid a 3 hour + wait. It is also good to know about having to pay in cash, my parents don't carry much cash any more. They use debit cards for just about everything (my mom used to write a check for everything even for like $2.00).

They could also make a a trip to the DMV in Wellington or Newton and have probably a zero wait time. Andover can be quite busy some days, though not as bad as Twin Lakes.

I just got my license renewed in Andover, stood in a line out in the parking lot for at least 40 minutes. The whole process took over an hour.

Which is a lot better than has been discussed here previously. I expect to wait at least an hour no matter what I'm doing. It's been as quick as 30 minutes and as long as maybe an hour and a half. But never longer than that for me personally.

Last few times I've driven past the Andover one, there has been a line way outside. Newton charges extra and they said that any oeople from Wichita are venturing that way. There is one in El Dorado at the courthouse. Last time I was there the line wass non-existent. Why is the process taking so long now? And why are there only two ina county of half a million?
