Well, let me re-phrase. Our two choices seem to be "work related attack" and "terrorist attack".

Work related is generally more spur of the moment. Yes, an individual may have been on a slow burn for awhile and thought/plotted, so it could be planned.

A terrorist attack more well planned. In this case, family was given an excuse for watching the child, he attended the function, left, attack with his wife (that's generally not work related) when he knew they attendees would not be expecting. It also may lead all the way back to his trip to Saudi Arabia and his marriage. Hardly, a work related type of plan. Sorry I was not clear enough.

Look Im on the opposite side of pretty much everyone in this thread. i find it humorous that after the attack on planned parenthood last week in Colorado the first comment after it was mentioned was shaming someone because there were not enough facts.
with that said I am not attacking your or disagreeing with you. But get kind of tired of people compartmentalize these acts. Generally with what I know of workplace violence it doesnt tend to be an immediate thing. it festers and boils and later on down the road it happens. It might not be as well thought out but still planned none the less. Walking into a building and shooting it up is not just a random act. Whether the guys name is John or Sayed.

Either way this is absolutely horrifying and disgusting. I dont want anyone to die. But i also wonder why we are working on 3 pages on this while we just had something similar just this last week and not a peep from the folks here? Since I have said this im fully prepared to read "Well yeah it was a terror threat but" No buts!

It would be difficult for me to believe that a young couple with a baby would both do this, with so much foresight and planning, and not be religiously motivated. I suppose they could be/were insane. If it were just the guy, I could buy planned workplace violence as an explanation. There are just too many signs pointing to this being an act of jihad.

One more thing we should not forget if San Bernardino turns out to be fundamentalist religious terrorism: Most of the 9/11 hijackers (I believe all but one) same from Saudi Arabia.

Al Quaida was provided material support and sympathy from Saudi Arabia.

ISIS was provided material support and sympathy from Saudi Arabia.

The muslim's wife who helped him with the attack yesterday was from Saudi Arabia.

Most republicans get their money from the NRA. You and I both know that lobbyist money is directed and intended to achieve a legislative result, or in this case, no result at all.

You may believe the media sucks, but to make an analogy, it's raining hard, the lake behind the dam (the NRA) is getting full and at some point it will break.

Again, praying will not fix the problem, action will.

Here's an easy one for those wondering what to do:
Every individual on the no-fly list can go to their local gun store and buy all the guns and ammo they want. Legally. We won't let them fly on planes because we're concerned they might blow one up, but we are not apparently concerned with them going to their neighborhood gun store and stocking up.

And if that strikes you as odd, you might ask yourself why we haven't seen legislation drafted to address this gap.

The reason (or politician, for that matter) is that any republican that writes a bill addressing gun ownership will automatically incur the wrath of the NRA. Whether it makes sense or not.

Another area that could be fixed easily is the lack of consistency between state gun registries. Seems like there should be a framework that ensures consistency. Having the federal government do it makes sense. The NRA could be engaging people at this point to ensure the best possible outcome, but they don't want to.

The second part of this, and the part that you don't know about, is that the pipeline will actually carry a tar sand slurry from Canada, which at the current price of oil (and the future price for at least the next year or two) will not support the added expense of extracting the oil from the tar sands.

The third part of this, which again you don't know, is this: They were digging open-air pits in the Beaumont, Texas area as a proof of concept. Extracting the oil from the tar sand requires the use of noxious solvents in an open-air environment which means that chemical vapors from the process will drift over peoples businesses and homes. Not only that, what do you do with the remnants of the solvent and contaminated sand? That's another superfund site waiting to happen. Like always, the chemical companies make the mess and then the taxpayers pay to clean it up (corporate welfare at its best).

Kahn you really need to ease up on the guessing of what people do. I'm not a civil engineer. The word engineer has not once graced me in an academic setting or a professional one.

The oil that was going to be transported with the additional capacity that the Keystone XL would have allowed will now be coming here via train and semi-truck. Out of the three methods of oil transport there, which one do you suppose poses the smallest risk to life and property? It is a pretty easy answer, because the best option is better in such regards by order of magnitude.

The point isn't about the construction jobs or environmental tangents you ran down; it is about keeping money away from the middle east kooks. ANY North American oil production helps that.

You don't start talking or enacting change the day of a tragedy. Wait until the emotions die down and the issue can be discussed rationally. I despise the left for their jumping on every crisis and tragedy before the victim's bodies are cold.

A better framework would have prevented this. We need more frameworks. Going forward, in an impactful, dedicated manner, initiating a common and forward thinking framework, we can overcome the challenges of the past and lead us to greater unity and purpose in the future.
