Cincy got beat by a QB on one leg and 1 wr that makes most NFL rosters. They had their chances and Chris Jones and Patrick Mahomes closed the door on them. Hope they enjoy the Super Bowl from their couches.

It's really difficult to beat a good team 4 times in 15 months. And no matter how annoying a good % of their fan base might be, good luck to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. This Bengal fan will be rooting for them.

I picked a PHI-KC SH on my show this week (and picked KC -2.5 on Thurs) so that’s where I was rooting. But gotta be honest. Cincy got hosed on calls today. Brutal.

Gene says some stupid things. There were a lot more egregious holds that weren't called on the Bengals than the hold people are complaining about on that run.

You could call a hold on pretty much every play. The rule book is written to say not all holding is a penalty. Kind of like in basketball that not all contact is a foul. Throughout the game there were a number of plays, a few that ended up being big for the Bengals, where Chiefs fans had gripes about holds not being called as well. A couple were kind of baffling on how they weren't because they were a lot worse than the one on the Mahomes run that so many are bitching about. There was one where an offensive lineman nearly had Frank Clark in a full Nelson as he was trying to get to Burrow. Slight exaggeration, but the lineman was behind Clark and holding him from behind, under his arms, to prevent him from going anywhere. Jones was held a lot and more could have been called. That's just the way it is in every NFL game of the season.

The game came down to the Chiefs D line dominating the Bengals O line and the fact that a gimpy Mahomes, down 4 WRs, outplayed Burrow. And also have to give a lot of credit to the rookie DBs of KC. I was really worried when Sneed went out on that first drive. Williams and Watson stepped up and Cook had some up and down moments but made a big play when needed. Losing Gay also hurt as he's our most versatile LB.

I only hope we can get most, if not all, back for the Super Bowl. Hardman seems a major question with his injury being re-aggravated. Watson should be back as he was just out due to illness. I haven't heard anything on Toney's ankle or JuJu's knee. Gay seems to think he will be fine. All I've heard is shoulder injury. Guessing it wasn't dislocated. Sneed is a big question. You never know with concussions how long symptoms may persist. I think Reid went out with something as well later in the game. Pacheco seemed a bit hobbled as well by the end. Then of course, there's Kelce's back and Mahomes ankle. The ankle will continue to be a problem, just hope it's a bit stronger and has a bit more stability.

3rd Down "do-over"

On 2nd-and-9, Patrick Mahomes threw an incomplete pass with the score tied 20-20. When setting up 3rd-and-9, the NFL referees officiation the game had to reset the spot but the play clock kept running. To fix this, Ron Torbert announced, “Please reset the play clock to 10 seconds, please. The play clock and game clock will start on my signal.”

The problem was, after an incomplete pass, only the play clock — and not the game clock – should have started when Torbert tweeted his whistle.

Both clocks started, though, and Mahomes hit Travis Kelce four yards short of a first down, setting up a Chiefs punt. However, what no one heard or noticed was field judge Tom Hill running in from the back of the Bengals defense to stop the play.

That official correctly recognized the game clock shouldn’t have started and stopped the play, even though no one heard it with the noise at Arrowhead Stadium. Torbert then announced the mistake and reset 3rd-down, much to the chagrin of Bengals fans, head coach Zac Taylor, and the “NFL rigged” crowd on social media.

The Chiefs eventually punted anyway, but the seeds of discontent were already planted.

After the game, Torbert explained to the NFL pool reporter what happened and how re-doing the down is standard operating procedure. “If we were trying to shut down the play and we couldn’t, we would shut it down and go back and replay the down,” Torbert said.

Intentional Grounding

Burrow threw a 2nd-and-7 incompletion under pressure, and after an officials conference, they called the play intentional grounding. That call set up a 3rd-and-16 instead of a 2nd-and-7. The Bengals made the first down on a 23-yard completion to tight end Hayden Hurst on the next play, but that didn’t make Bengals fans any happier about the call.

After the game, that call was another that NFL referee Ron Torbert was asked to clarify.

The quarterback was under duress, in danger of being sacked, and threw the ball into the ground. There was no eligible receiver in the area, and he had not gotten out of the pocket and thrown it beyond the line of scrimmage. So, that was a foul for intentional grounding.

It was a textbook explanation for a seemingly obvious call, but not one that stopped “NFL rigged” from trending.

I've seen some Bengals fans try to compare this obvious intentional grounding call to an incomplete pass thrown by Mahomes earlier in the game. Mahomes was hit as he threw the ball and it bounced three or four yards in front of Travis Kelce. The Burrow throw landed about twelve to fifteen yards in front of the closest receiver and hit behind his offensive line. Very different scenarios.
