  • Shocker SB at Coastal Carolina Invitational

The Shockers head to Conway, SC, this weekend for the Coastal Carolina (Chanticleers) Invitational. Conway is just inland from Myrtle Beach, and the games are played at a high school field there.

But what, you may ask, is a Chanticleer? Inquiring minds want to know! Chanticleer is from the Nun's Priest Tale in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. The Chanticleer is a proud and fierce rooster who dominates the barnyard. In the early 1960's, Coastal was a two-year branch of the University of South Carolina and had the nickname of Trojans. Many people began to push for a nickname more closely related to the Gamecock. Thus, the Chanticleer was born. For those of you who want to know more - I know you are out there - see here.

Nonetheless, the Shockers play Western Carolina and Drexel on Friday, Western Carolina again and Coastal Carolina on Saturday and close the tournament on Sunday against Albany.

The Western Carolina Catamounts - wait, we have to stop again. (What is it with these weird nicknames? Wink, wink.) A Catamount is a wild cat, like a cougar or bobcat or lynx. It gets even better. In the early '30's when the nickname was being chosen, the second choice was the Mountain Boomer, a ground squirrel. For the insatiably curious, see here.

Western are a member of the Southern Conference where they were a preseason pick for seventh among the nine teams. Georgia Southern is the pick in the SoCon. The Catamounts have a record of 5-6, one of the losses being to UMKC in an early-February tournament.

The Drexel Dragons (they thought they had a unique nickname - ha! - they came to the wrong tournament) are members of the Colonial Athletic Association where Hofstra is the perennial power. Drexel are a tie for sixth among the eight teams in the preseason poll. Their record is 2-6 after splitting a double header today.

Coastal are members of the twelve-team Big South, and you don't know where any of the schools are. Well, I suppose you could figure out UNC-Asheville and Winthrop. With nine of the teams playing softball, the Lady Chants (pronounced Shonts) are the pick for first in the preseason poll, and their third baseman is the Preseason Player of the Year. Their record is 6-8 with two of the wins over Missouri State in an early-February tournament.

The Albany Great Danes (see? - what did I tell you?) are the pick for first along with Boston University in the seven-team America East Conference. They opened their season last weekend at another Florida Gulf Coast University tournament, going 0-5 with three of the losses to Big 10 schools. And Boston University are the Terriers. I knew you would want to know.

It appears the strength of this tournament is along the lines of our first tournament.

Only a flyingmoose, minus his squirrel would come up with that. Wait a minute. Is that right?

The goshockers preview of the tournament. Unfortunately, only the Chanticleer games have live stats.

We open the tournament against Western Carolina at 9am our time and play Drexel at 130pm.

Live stats for the Western Carolina game.

Hayley Temple got the Shocks on the board in the top of the 1st with a 2-run double.

However, Katie struggled in the circle in the bottom of the first giving up 4 runs (only 1 earned) on only 2 hits. She walked 3. Not sure the live stats have captured everything from that inning.

In any case the Shocks are down 2-4 after 1.

Thanks for the catch. I had looked at goshockers early, but not late.

We have the "offensive" lineup in this game with Laura in right and Danika sitting.

Shocks put a 3-spot on the board in the top of the 4th to regain the lead at 5-4.

WCU picks up a run on 3-hits to tie it up 5-5 after 4th.

              If I may-

              Shockers 8-5 Western Carolina

              Katie in the circle.

As noted, we score two in the top of the first as Hayley's double drives home Brittany and Ali who had singled and walked, respectively. The Catamounts score four in the bottom half, Erin's error at third creating the three unearned runs.

In the second, Western get runners at second and third on a walk, error (Ali) and sac bunt, but Katie gets a strikeout and pop up to end the inning.

The Shocks score three in the top of the fourth. Brianne doubled and then Layne doubled her home. After Brittany walked, Melanie singled to left for one run and the left fielder's error allowed Brittany to score also. A pitching change gets the last two Shocker outs. But the Catamounts tie the score in the bottom half after two are out - double, single, single. 5-5, after four complete.

The Shocks regain the lead in the fifth. Hayley's single and Danika's double set the stage for Brianne's two-RBI single. Another Catamount pitching change gets three outs. Despite a single and a walk, Katie makes it through the inning. She has stranded ten runners through five innings. Shocks lead, 7-5 after five complete.

Melanie leads off the sixth with a homer. The Shocks load the bases with a hit batter, bunt single and walk, but do not score any more. After two outs, two singles for Western, but no runs. Shocks lead, 8-5 after six complete.

In the seventh, we get two runners on with a single and hit batter, but no runs. Sloan comes on in relief to start the bottom of the seventh. Katie has given up nine hits and five walks, stranding twelve, and must have thrown a ton of pitches by now. Sloan gets the save, retiring all three batters. Shocks win.

Shockers get a nice win considering Katie's rough start. Among the Shocks' twelve hits are two by Brittany and Brianne (including a double) and three by Melanie (a homer) and Hayley (a double). Multiple RBI by Melanie, Hayley and Brianne, all with two. Shockers strand eleven themselves.

Shocks now up 8-5 in the bottom of the 6th. Katie has come on to relieve (at some point, not sure when) and there are 2 outs and 2 on. Shocks need to close this one for some improved mental health.

That was a strange move to pinch hit for Erin Carney (0.240) with Fr Mason Paige with 2-outs and bases loaded in the top of the 6th despite having a 3-run lead. Paige struck out and is now 0-12 with 6 K's on the year and Katie has not been her sharpest so far today.

Katie started and went 6. Sloan is in brought in to pitch the 7th.

Sloan in to try and close it out. Still 8-5 Shocks into the bottom of the 7th.

Good thing HCKB went with the offensive lineup as Katie was not her sharpest. Katie got a little payback today for the several well-pitched games where she came out on the short end.

A lot of runners on the base path today. 13 runs and a combined 23 runners LOB (WSU 11 and WCU 12).

                        Good job Ladies.

Sloan picks up the save with a 1-2-3 7th. Nice win ladies.

Erin had struck out twice, and since Paige was going in for defense anyway, give her another chance? But, yes, we have to get Erin going. Laura also struck out twice, and Danika finished the game in her spot, contributing a double.

No problem with Paige going in for defense, but she can do that without pinch-hitting. I don't have a big problem with pinch hitting for Erin if you have a quality bat you can do with. That was a great opportunity to maybe have Erin do something that might get her going. Pinch hitting for her in that situation with Paige will not exactly be a confidence builder for Erin.

But hey, second-guessing is easy, although I did question the move as it happened and not strictly in hind-sight.
