The Shockers head to Conway, SC, this weekend for the Coastal Carolina (Chanticleers) Invitational. Conway is just inland from Myrtle Beach, and the games are played at a high school field there.
But what, you may ask, is a Chanticleer? Inquiring minds want to know! Chanticleer is from the Nun's Priest Tale in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. The Chanticleer is a proud and fierce rooster who dominates the barnyard. In the early 1960's, Coastal was a two-year branch of the University of South Carolina and had the nickname of Trojans. Many people began to push for a nickname more closely related to the Gamecock. Thus, the Chanticleer was born. For those of you who want to know more - I know you are out there - see here.
Nonetheless, the Shockers play Western Carolina and Drexel on Friday, Western Carolina again and Coastal Carolina on Saturday and close the tournament on Sunday against Albany.
The Western Carolina Catamounts - wait, we have to stop again. (What is it with these weird nicknames? Wink, wink.) A Catamount is a wild cat, like a cougar or bobcat or lynx. It gets even better. In the early '30's when the nickname was being chosen, the second choice was the Mountain Boomer, a ground squirrel. For the insatiably curious, see here.
Western are a member of the Southern Conference where they were a preseason pick for seventh among the nine teams. Georgia Southern is the pick in the SoCon. The Catamounts have a record of 5-6, one of the losses being to UMKC in an early-February tournament.
The Drexel Dragons (they thought they had a unique nickname - ha! - they came to the wrong tournament) are members of the Colonial Athletic Association where Hofstra is the perennial power. Drexel are a tie for sixth among the eight teams in the preseason poll. Their record is 2-6 after splitting a double header today.
Coastal are members of the twelve-team Big South, and you don't know where any of the schools are. Well, I suppose you could figure out UNC-Asheville and Winthrop. With nine of the teams playing softball, the Lady Chants (pronounced Shonts) are the pick for first in the preseason poll, and their third baseman is the Preseason Player of the Year. Their record is 6-8 with two of the wins over Missouri State in an early-February tournament.
The Albany Great Danes (see? - what did I tell you?) are the pick for first along with Boston University in the seven-team America East Conference. They opened their season last weekend at another Florida Gulf Coast University tournament, going 0-5 with three of the losses to Big 10 schools. And Boston University are the Terriers. I knew you would want to know.
It appears the strength of this tournament is along the lines of our first tournament.
