Not sure what happened but they list John Nicholas as a DQ in his 400 portion of the Decathlon.

Probably failed to stay in his lane would be my guess.

Maybe, although I'm not sure you even get two false starts in decathlon events.

              Oh. That would suck.

Is a lane violation only if you step on an inside lane and/or impede someone on an outside lane? Or is it step outside onto either lane regardless of impeding?

I really don't know the technicalities for sure.

C'mon, everyone knows that rule. It's three seconds.

Hahaha - it would be funny if they adopted the ol' basketball cherry pickin' rule and just tacked on 3 seconds to the person's sprint time instead of a DQ.

                    • goShockers.com article confirms that the DQ was due to a lane violation:

Freshman John Nicholas finished 22nd in the Junior Decathlon with 5470 points. His score was significantly affected by getting disqualified in the 400m for a lane violation.
Getting DQ'd or failng to put up a mark will always kill your chances in the multi-events.

                      • Austin Bahner sitting in 6th place in the Sr. Decathlon after 9 events with only the 1,500 meter race to go.

According to goShockers.com the 1,500 will be live on NBC at 5:18pm today (in about 20 minutes) although I'm not seeing it on the TV guide.

You can also watch live at http://tv.usatf.org/ although right now they have audio only.

                        • Austin hangs on for 7th place at the USA Track & Field Championships finishing 6 points shy of 6th and 21 points ahead of UNI's Daniel Gooris.

Austin's 7,574 points were well short of his Shocker record 7,847 points set at the NCAA Championships however he was the highest finisher attached to an NCAA school.

Conratulations to the Heights High product on a great finish to his Junior year.

                          • I have never heard of the Thorpe Cup, but Austin Bahner will participate as a result of his 7th place finish in the decathlon at the USA Championships.

The USA Thorpe Cup Team, is an international competition that pits the USA against Germany on July 27-28 in Chula Vista, CA.

DES MOINES, Iowa- The Shockers wrapped up competition at the USA Championships today with the big story of the weekend being the performance of Wichita Heights product Austin Bahner, who finished seventh in the Decathlon with 7574 points.

So Austin's season continues. Congrats and good luck to Austin.

                            • Austin Bahner finished 7th in the Thorpe Cup with a score of 7,744 points which was only 127 point behind the winner.

CHULA VISTA, Calif.- Wichita State Track and Field student-athlete Austin Bahner finished seventh in the decathlon as competition at the Thorpe Cup finished on Sunday afternoon.

Austin finished 1st in the discus, 1st in the long jump, 2 in the 400 and 4 in the 100.

He finished 6th in both the javelin and the 1500 and 9th in the pole vault.

He was hurt by a 12th place finish in the shot put and two last place (14th) finishes in the high jump and the 110 hurdles. Sounds like he may have hit a hurdle and stumbled in that one.

In any case, a good showing for the Shocker senior-to-be out of Wichita Heights. He is due for a little rest now have a very busy year. Looking forward to some very good things from Austin in his senior year if he can stay healthy.

                              :applause:
