  • -- Allows more hometown fans to see WSU play
That only works if it's a name opponent. There isn't going to be that high a demand for Tulsa
-- Allows more visiting teams and potentially thousands of visting fans to spend more money in Downtown Wichita, Old Town, etc...
I agree. Not sure Tulsa will travel that well.
-- Helps WSU market IBA as an NCAA Men's tournament host
    The obvious one
-- Helps attract additional teams to play WSU
It might. Hasn't done so yet.
-- Counters any recruiting edge to teams that play in larger arenas than Koch ("of course we too can play in an NBA type arena and we do 1 or 2 games per year, but we elect to play most of our games in our loud 10,000+ seat campus jewel. At WSU you get both")
Not really sure how big a deal that really is. But if it is then you have a point

    • It will be a nice change of pace from the same old, same old.

Besides, let's at least try it out just to see what it's like. If it doesn't go over well, then bring the bitching on.

I don't get all the animosity towards IBA when we haven't even set foot in there yet.
      Deuces Valley.
      ... No really, deuces.

I'd like to try it on Alcorn State or a team who will only accept a game at IBA rather than test it on one of the highlights of our home schedule, which could possibly provide the best atmosphere at Koch of the whole season.

        • I don't think that it's a bad idea to try out IBA for Shocker basketball. I doubt that Tulsa was the big fish that GM (and maybe AD) was hoping for whent he arena was built and they looked for it to help the BB program but it looks to be the best we can get for the time being and I suspect that they want to try it out and that IBA officials want it tried out too.

            • Yeah I don't understand the problem with IBA either. It is not going to supplant CKA but I think Shocker fans are really being sold short to say it wouldn't sell out. I want a ticket right now for a Tulsa game and OState game or any medium difficulty or higher game in IBA. I can eat in old town before and then party after the big victory. I am confident it will rock! I think what KU and KState are really afraid of is that we pull off a very popular event at IBA without them being included so lets bring it on. KState is stupid for not playing us there. KU wont while they are recruiting PE. Shockers can fill any arena in Central KS.

              • I don't see why they wouldn't be able to sell out IBA either. Get some really good halftime entertainment, a nice promotion, and a good team (eg Tulsa) and there is no reason they shouldn't be able to sell out IBA. As long as the marketers make is an event, they should have no trouble selling it out.

Face it: teams aren't banging on our door trying to play at Koch. They know there's a major chance they leave with a loss. (We went undefeated at home last year-excluding Nevada). WSU has to employ creative scheduling techniques, and if using IBA to draw teams to Wichita works, then lets do it. We have a "NBA-style" arena at our dispsosal and have the ability to create a "neutral-site" game in our own city without having to waste any travel resources.

Playing a game or two each and every year at IBA should happen. In fact, the Shocks almost have to.

                  • The worse case scenario against having a game at IBA is the season ticket holders. The big dogs get curbside parking at CKA it won't happen down down. Seats/seating arrangements don't transfere very well from CKA to IBA. Surely some of you remember the stink about where seats transfered from HLA to the Ks Colliseum. If there is change someone is going to be upset. I'm all for having a game or two downtown.

                    Comment

                    • My tickets at HLA were about the best in the place. In fact, I think I had THE best seat. I have good tickets today, although not nearly as good.

My seats in the BBA were awful. Admittedly, it wasn't made for basketball but still.....just awful.

And yes parking at the IBA will be frustrating but I have been to a half dozen events and only once was parking all that bad and I would consider that more of my own doing.

All that said, I am in favor of playing a game there, once a year. I just want it to be a better game than Tulsa, unless Tulsa is a top 20 team.

I don't think anybody is saying the Shox should never play there. Just saying it should be with an opponent who could fill the arena and is the only way to get that team here. Tulsa doesn't fit either of those.

I haven't heard many people bitchin' about IBA in general. Most of the people on here actually seem to want to play a game-a-year there.

Where people start complaining is the thought of K-State type schools offering home-and-IBA deals instead of home, away, IBA type deals. That's when IBA becomes a sore spot. K-State type schools shouldn't expect to get to play there and consider that to be our "home" game.

That's not to say that a deal like that wouldn't be great for a school like Duke, N.C., or some other big time school with a long tradition of winning -- those are great to play in IBA, since that's probably the only chance in hell of getting them here in the first place.

KU has 13 MVC Championships in basketball. Which is more than our Shockers.

KU's MVC competition from 1907 to 1928 included the powers of Grinnel College, K-State College (ouch), missourha, OU, Washington University in Saint Louis, Oklahoma A/M, and of course that basketball powerhouse Nebraska.
