    • If he gets here and plays like the Colorado Rockies, then there will be mass suicide right here in Do-Da Land.

I have no idea what you're trying to say, I thought the Rockies were pretty good last year...

I'll concern myself with whether Orukpe is redshirted once he actually arrives, and even when that does happen I'll just trust Marshall to do what makes sense. He's obviously much better placed than we are to judge Orukpe's actual readiness to contribute, and he knows what he's doing -- coaches with records comparable to his aren't exactly a dime a dozen in WSU history.

As for redshirting, the greatest Nigerian center, Hakeem Olajuwon, did it his first year at Houston. I know that wasn't specifically a WSU success story, but if Orukpe arrives and ends up redshirting and then turns out half as well as the Dream did, I for one will be pleased even if I have to wait an extra year.

Oh, and lawmaker -- this thread should be good until at least Christmas, especially if WSU's inside game hurts them against LSU and UAB.

              • Ricky -

I am confident that just about anyone we stick at the 5 spot will be an improvement over the Anti-Bookends you alluded to.

I will help WSUwatcher - if need be - to fulfill his prophecy of keeping this thread alive to at least Christmas.

                      • Some people have alluded to Orupke staying here 4 years. If he is any good at all he probably won't be staying beyond two. If he is what coach said he is "runs like a deer and dunks everything" I personally would play him instantly. He won't know the system but they can run a revised system (e.g. toss the ball up towards the rim, jump up and dunk it) until he gets everything down. There are a ton of games left to be played and if he can get going by the time we get to St. Louis and help us win the conference tournament then maybe everything comes together in the NCAA's.

I just don't want to toss away another year with help on the bench. Durley should have been playing last year there is no doubt at that. Last year was our "throw-away" year. Lets give it all we've got this year. Let's try to win now!

Actually, at this point in time I'm not sure Marshall is in a lot stronger position than we are to judge Orukpe's ability to contribute.

I may be wrong, but I believe I heard or read somewhere that Coach Marshall has never seen Orukpe play.

But I'm with you, if and when Orukpe shows and Coach Marshall actually gets to see him on a basketball court, I'll trust Coach Marshall to be able to judge what will be best for the player and for his team.

Naw, just a concerned Shocker fan who thinks it's time to stop planning about dominating the Valley and start doing it. We are a program that should be #1 or #2 each and every year.

I am tired of recruiting "projects" that need extra years beyond high-school to even be competent on the floor. If someone is injured fine, but let's recruit players that are good enough to play right away. I know it is easier said than done but I believe WSU should be at the level of being able to recruit 6'9" and 6'10" players that are good enough to play right away. No, many won't be like what Kansas recruits and be GOOD right away but our recruits should at least be competent enough to be a plus on the floor right out of the gate. Now, if we are fortunate to truly be over-loaded in talent at one position then maybe we should set a player out but no more Ryan Bradley's that come to WSU fat, unathletic, and incompetent. He could red-shirt for 9 years and he still wouldn't be any good.

When Kansas brings in 4 and 5 star recruits they play right away. When we bring in 2 and 3 star recruits they should play right away as well. Again, if we are loaded at one position because, lets say a "Maurice Evans" decides to go to WSU just because he has always planned on coming to WSU, and our "normal" recruits are still coming, then we should red-shirt. But holding Durley back last year and having Bradley swallow two years of a scholarship that could of at least been given to another 6'7" juco player who can jump, dribble, and maybe make a layup was tragic.

I know I am talking out of my a$$ a little and I don't have to take responsibility for my comments, but all this talk about red-shirting a guy that is supposedly a very gifted player is nonsense to me. Nobody knows what the future holds and if we have a good player and we are HURTING at a position, let's let him learn the game with real minutes and not sitting on the bench modeling the latest fashions from the men's big and tall warehouse.
