"I guess after what I saw last night, our coaches and our team are AAA compared to USU also."
that sounds like something a die-hard fan would say about his team
there's a huge difference between 'having the balls to call out our coach' and knowing what's behind what he said and why - but i'm sure you've been a head coach at a division 1 ncaa institution and have all the answers, right?....it takes such courage to call him out and and talk down to him on an anonymous message board, doesn't it?
what exactly am i 'clearly in over my head' about? because even though i'm on here reading posts every day, but choose to hardly ever post? is that it?
i find that hilarious.
See the thread titled Why??? in the basketball forum. There are others on there questioning the coaching last night. You better go ahead and call them out too because they must not be die hard fans either.
no, i haven't looked at that thread yet today - i just clicked on here and continue to see you whine about something our head coach said over and over like a disgruntled 70 year old who is still holding a grudge against the boy that broke up with her when she was 17
If Marshall wants to "tell it like it is," and say our crowd is AAA compared to USU, then we sure as hell have the right to say our team is AAA compared to USU. I am 100% behind ShockCity on this issue. I kinda wish someone would make that comment to Marshall on the coaches show just to hear what he has to say.

go for it
Would it be taking a jab at our players, or complimenting USU?
Screw it, let's just toss his ass out in the street where he belongs! Let's be the only program in the country to fire a coach who just won us 22 games! He's obviously not good enough to coach in the Valley, let alone anywhere else! Schaus was a moron to hire him in the first place!
Sexton, show us how good an AD you can be! Toss him and his entire family to the curb! PERSONALLY lead the tar and feathers mob while we run him and his family outta town on a rail! Get us a REAL COACH who can not only win, but who can beat EVERYBODY, 100% of the time! Get us a REAL COACH who craps gold bricks, thinks Wichita is the single greatest place on God's Green Earth and'll go bowling with Lutz every day for the rest of time!
As for the players, it's obvious they're not good enough to play for the Mighty WICHITA STATE UNIVERSITY! Pull their scholarships IMMEDIATELY! Heck, because of their displays on the basketball court, we need to instigate an immediate inquiry into academic honesty on campus, because the basketball product we have seen on the court could not have been produced by anyone capable of grades better than a 1.0! Professors must be fired, because somebody's obviously cheating if any of these dunderheads are still eligible for anything on campus besides employment on the janitorial staff, and that might even be a stretch!
Come on fellow Shockers! Let us take a stand for everything we believe in! We, a group of internet basketball wizards are far better at running a basketball team than a man paid nearly a million dollars to do that exact job! I daresay we could even play the game better ourselves than these 18-22 year old dunderheads we have now! Let us rise from behind our keyboards and do what we know must be done!
I feel I have accurately captured the prevailing sentiments in this thread. When's the next Fire Marshall/Garret sucks thread? I don't want to be late to the party...
/seriously, lighten up...
Deep in the heart of couldn't give a crap about college basketball-land and I miss the SHOX.

One thing people haven't mentioned enough is that it is very obvious Marshall takes a lot of pride in the atmosphere at Koch. He must make it a big part of his sales pitch to recruits.
I think he was just really impressed with USU's crowd and paying them a compliment. In my opition, people are blowing a poorly chosen phrase out of proportion.
Does anyone know what context or what environment this was in? I want to hear an audio clip of this before I judge. The quote may have been taken out of context.
I would never, ever be 'down' on anyone's fandom. I would have my own observations:
1. HCGM has a 'shoot from the hip' style that is entertaining (FAR more entertaining than coach Turgeon and pretty much as knowledgeable at the same time). What that means is, every so often he's going to say something that might rub someone the wrong way. It's a fact. Most of us like that style of discourse because he can make us laugh (Rock-em-sock-em comment, plus many, many others come to mind) or at least smile while giving good analysis of the games. We have to realize that some of it comes with the territory. It's his personality.
2. Countless times HCGM has referred to our fan base as 'special' and 'great' and a hundred other complimentary words. Time and time and time again folks. What I'm saying in, has he not earned a little benefit of the doubt on this latest issue? 100 comments positive, one that MIGHT, I mean MIGHT be considered slightly uncomplimentary means he doesn't appreciate the fans? That he's trying to insult us? Come on people.... really? Hmm....
3. With the comment itself: to me the minute I read it (and I admit I did not hear it--didn't listen to the postgame at 1:00am) I knew he was comparing the student sections. There is NO COMPARISON. Our student section is pretty tame folks. Partly due to the demographics of our university, partly because of other issues... but it's a true statement. If you compare their student section--their creativity--saying ours are AAA by comparison is probably being nice. I don't think it's unclear at all. Remember when we about got the T (the crowd--students in particular) awhile back and he very mildly suggested that they need to be 'more creative'? Well, did anyone do that? Nope--same old "You still suck--balls" and "Who Cares" yada, yada, yada. Basically his plea was ignored. If you add this situation to him seeing what a true student section can do, it seems pretty clear to me. The heavy dude in the mermaid suit was HILARIOUS! It was NOT condescending, rude, classless... just funny. Remember that he changes outfits with each opponent. If that's not creativity, then what is? Do our students do anything close to that? NO. God Bless em'. I don't hate our students--just pointing out the facts. They do what they can, but they can do more.
4. Anyone who thinks HCGM thinks that our 'older' or non-traditional (non-student) fan base is lame is not paying attention. Ok, so do people think that he believes that folks like Cleo Littleton (who shows up at every game) or families with young 'ens are not doing their part? Come on people--of course he's happy with those folks. He knows that we sell out nearly every game. He's appreciative or he wouldn't have come here from Winthrop. That doesn't mean that our student section can't change it up some or even show up more consistently.
5. This is a SEPARATE ISSUE. The team's slide lately--we are all disappointed. We all want them to play better. We are all hoping they make a run in the tourney. We all know this season is an upgrade from last. We all would like to make the NCAA tourney now. We all know that may or may not happen. Finally, we all would like to see the team finish strong. Hopefully that will happen. But let's not run these 2 issues together.... they are separate and should remain that way emotionally. The team still needs us to do our part to support them--even if they are flailing. Turning our backs on them won't help.
6. HCGM was completely justified in being disgusted by the boo-birds the other night. I would be too. His behavior in the press conference was a bit juvenile, but not that bad folks. No profanity. No tirade. Just a disdain for Bob Lutz. Will he need to have a bit more tact in the future--you bet, and I'm pretty sure he will.
7. USU was a better team. They play together, they execute better, and they're well coached. No shame in getting beat by them in their home arena. It'll be different in 2 years of course as there will be no excuse for losing to them in our place.
Seriously... tarring and feathering the coach is a bit of an over-reaction to me. CLEARLY the expectations for next season will be higher in terms of our team's performance. He will have pressure to make the big dance next year and the following for sure as most fans will not be satisfied with NIT again after this season. Even those who are eternal optimists such as myself, I won't be satisfied without more improvement--I can only imagine the rest of the fan base. That's why he gets paid the big bucks. Our fan base is unique and great in and of itself. It sure was cool to see the USU fans though--just fun to watch. I can imagine being there was even more fun.
Now, here's to a strong showing this week and in the MVC tourney!

What do you think the recruits are gonna think of his AAA statement?
