  • "They fricken taunted Mike Kennedy - that is taking it up not just a notch but to the major leagues.

How many schools taunt the away team radio guy?

    That is awesome."

Kennedy and Dahl had a great laugh about that. Kennedy said "Well, I guess I have finally arrived."

The assumption here is that the atmosphere in Koch Arena is unmatched and he was suprised how good the Spectrum is.

I've tried finding the link, but they had something that Dahl had said in their Gameday pamphlet that they were "encouraged" to taunt.

Our fans can improve, so can our game day sports staff. Lets find a new way to use the video board- freshen things up. Been to a college game and they play some 90's song where everyone starts jumping up and down. They have alumn and local celebrities on their board jumping- old and young, just an idea.

Student body- GET CREATIVE! Throw streamers, confettie. Do a little research on opponents, isn't that what facebook is for? Big kid on first row- where a halter top when they are shooting free throws, that kind of stuff.

Let's look back a year now and see this as the spark that ignited a new atmosphere at the Chuck!

Yeah, Joe College in Lawrence is going to print them for us..with Frank Marin's picture on the back.

I've said recently and for years, the only area our crowd doesn't measure up is on the student end. They need to make a commitment to be there and make it happen. Cheerleaders need to be revamped and remissioned to lead the "Cheers" not travel all over the world doing sommersaults. We can't help having an older crowd, but we can sure do whatever it takes to fix the student support problem!

                  • There is no doubt that USU students were great and deserve kudos.

However, was I the only one who had the urge to play "Where's Waldo" everytime they showed the USU student body?

                    • I've been to games at KU and KSU in the last few years and WSU's home atmosphere is every bit as good as those places.

It simply appears to me that USU may simply be a notch above.

We have nothing to apologize for. The non-students in our home crowd are very, very loud. Just think back to the UNI game.

I also think there is an opportunity to get more students to the game, but I don't know how to do it.

I will still take our overall program over USU any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

Until this year, throwing ANYTHING was a one-way ticket to an unceremonious exit via boot-to-butt. Confetti is still douchy. Again, it's easy to be creative when your student body lives mostly on campus, can't drink, can't screw, can't stay up late pounding energy drinks, and really has nothing else to do but plan for basketball games. Do the students need more organization? Yes. Will we get it? No. That's just the way things are.

Im sure the situations regarding Utah State/Wichita State student body are different. I am sure there is a way to organize the more traditional student base though.

Personally with what we are given the student section is cool. I dont mean that as a slam but we have more of a non traditional base if you will. And when we do have people that are gung ho and want to do something we get an 8 page thread of people slamming them.

Unfortunately though Im sure the students will come up with cool and awesome and some jerk off will complain about it because they forgot what it was like to be young and dumb.

                              1. HCGM has a 'shoot from the hip' style that is entertaining (FAR more entertaining than coach Turgeon and pretty much as knowledgeable at the same time). What that means is, every so often he's going to say something that might rub someone the wrong way. It's a fact. Most of us like that style of discourse because he can make us laugh (Rock-em-sock-em comment, plus many, many others come to mind) or at least smile while giving good analysis of the games. We have to realize that some of it comes with the territory. It's his personality.

                              2. Countless times HCGM has referred to our fan base as 'special' and 'great' and a hundred other complimentary words. Time and time and time again folks. What I'm saying in, has he not earned a little benefit of the doubt on this latest issue? 100 comments positive, one that MIGHT, I mean MIGHT be considered slightly uncomplimentary means he doesn't appreciate the fans? That he's trying to insult us? Come on people.... really? Hmm....

                              3. With the comment itself: to me the minute I read it (and I admit I did not hear it--didn't listen to the postgame at 1:00am) I knew he was comparing the student sections. There is NO COMPARISON. Our student section is pretty tame folks. Partly due to the demographics of our university, partly because of other issues... but it's a true statement. If you compare their student section--their creativity--saying ours are AAA by comparison is probably being nice. I don't think it's unclear at all. Remember when we about got the T (the crowd--students in particular) awhile back and he very mildly suggested that they need to be 'more creative'? Well, did anyone do that? Nope--same old "You still suck--balls" and "Who Cares" yada, yada, yada. Basically his plea was ignored. If you add this situation to him seeing what a true student section can do, it seems pretty clear to me. The heavy dude in the mermaid suit was HILARIOUS! It was NOT condescending, rude, classless... just funny. Remember that he changes outfits with each opponent. If that's not creativity, then what is? Do our students do anything close to that? NO. God Bless em'. I don't hate our students--just pointing out the facts. They do what they can, but they can do more.

                              4. Anyone who thinks HCGM thinks that our 'older' or non-traditional (non-student) fan base is lame is not paying attention. Ok, so do people think that he believes that folks like Cleo Littleton (who shows up at every game) or families with young 'ens are not doing their part? Come on people--of course he's happy with those folks. He knows that we sell out nearly every game. He's appreciative or he wouldn't have come here from Winthrop. That doesn't mean that our student section can't change it up some or even show up more consistently.

                              5. This is a SEPARATE ISSUE. The team's slide lately--we are all disappointed. We all want them to play better. We are all hoping they make a run in the tourney. We all know this season is an upgrade from last. We all would like to make the NCAA tourney now. We all know that may or may not happen. Finally, we all would like to see the team finish strong. Hopefully that will happen. But let's not run these 2 issues together.... they are separate and should remain that way emotionally. The team still needs us to do our part to support them--even if they are flailing. Turning our backs on them won't help.

                              6. HCGM was completely justified in being disgusted by the boo-birds the other night. I would be too. His behavior in the press conference was a bit juvenile, but not that bad folks. No profanity. No tirade. Just a disdain for Bob Lutz. Will he need to have a bit more tact in the future--you bet, and I'm pretty sure he will.

                              7. USU was a better team. They play together, they execute better, and they're well coached. No shame in getting beat by them in their home arena. It'll be different in 2 years of course as there will be no excuse for losing to them in our place.

Seriously... tarring and feathering the coach is a bit of an over-reaction to me. CLEARLY the expectations for next season will be higher in terms of our team's performance. He will have pressure to make the big dance next year and the following for sure as most fans will not be satisfied with NIT again after this season. Even those who are eternal optimists such as myself, I won't be satisfied without more improvement--I can only imagine the rest of the fan base. That's why he gets paid the big bucks. Our fan base is unique and great in and of itself. It sure was cool to see the USU fans though--just fun to watch. I can imagine being there was even more fun.

Now, here's to a strong showing this week and in the MVC tourney!
