Being the odd man out here might be difficult, but I really don't feel good about this hire at all. I've got a pair of reasons...feel free to disagree, because I'd love to be convinced otherwise.
1- Lack of athletics-specific administrative experience. i've spent the past couple of years working in NCAA athletics, and it really scares me a ton that our top guy has no working experience in an athletics-specific environment. While I will agree that fundraising is a huge part of a job like this, it is not his only role.
2- Tying back into number one - the idea that we are simply going to "maintain" or "continue" what Schaus was doing in his policies/actions at WSU. Is this really what we want to do? Maintain? I think that we are all in agreement that we would like to see our program grow and continue in a positive direction; I'm afraid that someone who hasn't had experience in the athletics side of growth trying to follow policies of a predecesor could simply hold us back at the status quo. I agree that we have made great strides in the past nine years, but at the same time, don't we all think that we need to continue this aggressive growth -- and not just maintain what we are doing now? That kind of talk scares me a bit.
