Being the odd man out here might be difficult, but I really don't feel good about this hire at all. I've got a pair of reasons...feel free to disagree, because I'd love to be convinced otherwise.

1- Lack of athletics-specific administrative experience. i've spent the past couple of years working in NCAA athletics, and it really scares me a ton that our top guy has no working experience in an athletics-specific environment. While I will agree that fundraising is a huge part of a job like this, it is not his only role.

2- Tying back into number one - the idea that we are simply going to "maintain" or "continue" what Schaus was doing in his policies/actions at WSU. Is this really what we want to do? Maintain? I think that we are all in agreement that we would like to see our program grow and continue in a positive direction; I'm afraid that someone who hasn't had experience in the athletics side of growth trying to follow policies of a predecesor could simply hold us back at the status quo. I agree that we have made great strides in the past nine years, but at the same time, don't we all think that we need to continue this aggressive growth -- and not just maintain what we are doing now? That kind of talk scares me a bit.

umm, yes, maintain is the word. All sports have their coach, and they all have plans they had already worked with Jim about. So all this guy has to do right now is maintain. He has experience, just not in the sports relm. But hell, if Condy Rice wanted to be and could have been commish of the NFL, and what experience did she have. You have to look at the person we hired and just look at the potential and character he brings.

Has Ryan Cornelius called for his firing yet?

That's the surest sign of a good hire, in my mind...

Why can't we "maintain" the forward progress?

Don't we want to "maintain" the accumulation of All Sports Trophies?

What will Sexton stop doing that Schaus was doing?

I'm with ISASO on this one, I took the comment about "maintaining" to mean continued forward progression of the programs. I said it before in a previous post, I have to believe President Beggs knows exactly what he's doing and it will take a lot to prove otherwise given his track record.

Lutz Quoting President Beggs in today's Eagle:

"Eric's (lack of experience) is a legitimate concern," Beggs admitted Wednesday, after Sexton's hiring was announced during an afternoon news conference. "But I'm making a judgment. I'm willing to stake what I think is there because I've worked with him."

Sexton was on 1410 this morning - his comments:

                "It's all about the people"

Randy Smithson was on right after him and Randy's take was that he believed everyone in the department would be thrilled with this choice.

I'm not sure of the context of the "maintain" comment, but the impression left by the University in the articles in the Eagle this morning were certainly not that they merely intend to "maintain." Rather, they clearly intend to move the department to the next level.

Something tells me Beggs sat down with Gene and possibly Gregg and asked “what do you think we need in the new AD?” Considering where Gene is at this point in his career and Gregg being 1 year settled into the job, I’m guessing they told Beggs “we don’t need any personal agendas looking to shake things up at this point.” Listen to Gene and he seems pleased as punch with this hire.

Condi would ruin the NFL within two years. I know people who worked with her at Stanford. Huge ego and very thin skin.

Eric might be great; his people skills are very strong. However Beggs is ... 70 (??) ... and is going to retire "soon" (within 5 years? 2 years? I don't know). If it is a bad choice, he may not be here to suffer the effects.

What has Gene said? I'd be very interested to hear his thoughts on this hire (besides being pleased with it).

Having integrity, intelligence and passion---being very well-liked----together with the ability to raise lots of money---is a pretty good formula for success.

I look for Dr. Beggs to have some increased influence over the day to day of the athletic department over the next year or so. By that time, I think Eric will have things pretty well in hand.

We SHOULD have pretty decent stability over the next couple of years. Baseball and Men's and Women's Basketball are all on the right track-- or at least there are no major intersections coming up in the next year or two. Those decisions have been made for years to come.

Barring academic or recruiting violations, no huge challenges are on the horizon. Perfect time for Eric to get his feet wet.

And lets not forget that the entire athletic department is full of quality people who know what they're doing and can help Eric along the way as he learns the ins and outs of things.
