The Big Ten could be headed for a 20-game conference schedule, as commissioner Jim Delany told ESPN there have been discussions on the topic.

"Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany told ESPN there have been ongoing discussions about moving to a 20-game league schedule, and Michigan State's Tom Izzo feels as though it's heading in that direction....

The ACC announced last July that it intends to move to a 20-game league schedule beginning in the 2019-20 season...."

I see all the major conferences doing this, and we (the AAC) will follow this path as well.
That would not be good if the AAC did it at this time. We don't need two more games with the 200+ RPI cellar dweller teams.

Most probably will. It works for the PAC 12, Big 10, SEC, and ACC. However, does the Big 12 play 20 games with 9 schools? This would mean that they would play four teams 3 times. That won't happen. It also doesn't fit the Big East. The AAC may not HAVE to either.

      • I'm a little torn on this one, because the truest test is obviously a double H/H round robin, but when you have twelve teams (thus, 22 games) that just isn't practical. And the American, like most leagues, doesn't want to do pure divisions, which would dictate 16 (H/H in your own division, once a year against the other side).

So given that there pretty much has to be some reduction from the double round robin, I like the American model of pairing up the anticipated better teams as a way of strengthening their schedules and giving them more "quality" games.

        • I've read opinions also that the 20 game format is another method to put the *uppity mid majors* in their place more firmly at the bottom of the totem pole. It would become just about impossible for teams like WSU to schedule decent h/h with a school in one of those leagues. If they are truly going that way it only underscores the major importance of the move we are making to the American.

          • My point is that the Big 12, and Big East will be looking for pre-league games. The AAC has a few bottom dwellers who bring down the RPIs but the Big 10 has a few too. In fact all conferences have one or two who drag the league down.

When I read this I immediately thought that this would eliminate games that they would have to schedule against non power conference teams. Just their idea of separating the grain from the chaff.

              • NCAA needs a commissioner for things like this nature. Too many conferences trying to do their own thing.
Why walk somebody in baseball when you can hit them?

                  • Does anyone have a link to our 2017-18 schedule? I was in Tulsa late last week and noted we are doing a h/h with them as part of our AAC schedule (they put theirs out last Thursday), so I know we will have a h/h with Tulsa, I'm also thinking SMU, U of H and perhaps Memphis as well.

Are we playing one each with the rest of the conference?

                    Thanks in advance.

                            • Oh, I would enjoy a game against FGCU. And it's nice to schedule mid to low majors that have been competitive in recent years. Throws them a bone and gives us a fun game.
