I'd probably reduce that list: Oklahoma State, at IndSt, at IllSt, and at UNI. I expect the Shocks to be able to handle the home games against the Trees and Loyola, and Evansville anywhere. Still, we know that the 2012-13 overachievers managed to lose some unlikely games while Baker was out, so who knows?

"Expected NCAA team" is of course a debatable list, but if you want to instead look at "top 50 wins", 23 of the current top 25 already have one. Purdue doesn't, but they have a KenPom rating of 12 and their 2 losses were very close games to Louisville and Villanova. Oregon doesn't, but they have 4 top 100 wins.

WSU had no business in the top 25 prior to the OU win. Now that they won that game, they are right in the same tier as a handful of teams, some who are ranked, some who aren't. 27th overall seems very fair to me at this point. Anyone complaining about the poll gap between WSU and CU, whether last week or this week, is merely whining.

I go to Creighton games. Rivalry and hate talk aside, they are very good- a completely different look from anything in their past. That said, my "eye test" has them 16-20, not top 10. I think Wichita State is comparable, maybe a little better, maybe a little worse, too early to tell.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

I'm not sold on that. He lucked into some serious talent. If the current Creighton team were coached By Marshall, holy ****! Mo Watson, Marcus Foster and Justin Patton are the real deal. Patton may be a little underweight for a true seven footer, but he has moves, handles and range beyond the three point line. He loves to dunk, a lot. Khyri Thomas is great, as is Cole Huff. Three of the second five are former starters that still can log minutes without a letdown. The team plays very well together and shares the ball. Marcus Foster has been a model student, team leader and has had zero issues.

Like I said, Marshall would have fun coaching these guys, I think McDermott lucking into these guys makes him look better than he really is.

              • I think Foster is an okay guy, he just gets in his own way in much the same way as non-student athletes.

He didn't get into any real trouble at K-State, he just had a great freshman year, got full of himself, and became uncoachable. Reality set in when he was dismissed.

                        • That's not what hot him kicked off the team, though.

John, help us out -- how did McDermott "luck into" whatever talent Creighton has? Hasn't he been there to recruit it? And yes, I know P'Allen Foster is a transfer, but he wouldn't have been at Creighton unless McDermott wanted him and went after him (which may or may not have been a wise move, although it appears to have worked out so far). I'm as happy to make fun of the Jayboys as the next guy around here, but really -- where's the luck?

                            • McDermott also managed to earn 2 at-large bids (part of 3 straight NCAA appearances) for UNI during his tenure there. MVC teams earning at-large bids is no small feat.

I don't think he is an elite coach, but I think the hate often goes too far in the other direction.

He happened to be the guy coaching the Omaha team when local Justin Patton developed into a top 50. Likewise, he got local Khyri Thomas. Both those guys would be at Creighton regardless of coach. Cole Huff and Mo Watson are two great finds that transfered from other programs, as is Marcus Foster. So your core is two locals and a group of transfers.

Creighton is the real deal this year, they really are, but you have two Omaha guys that would be here regardless, plus a bunch of guys that Creighton was originally their second or third choice. Kobe Paras is a fine example. A great get for Creighton, he would be starting on many teams in the country, is buried in the depth chart. Paras, a coveted recruit, originally signed with UCLA, but something went bad. Once again, a guy that McDermott was unsuccessful in originally recruiting, luckily dropped in his lap.

In my opinion, lots of luck in assembling this team.
