Sounds like the parties have agreed in principle to a deal.

A qualifying offer is one that is made to match any offers a restricted free agent may receive on the open market (Baker was a restricted free agent). If a team doesn't match the offer by last Friday, Baker becomes an unrestricted free agent. But it sounds like either way, he will sign with the Knicks but it will be for less money. I don't know if that's a good thing for his value or not since the Knicks are a mess.

Here's a link to NBA.com, which probably better explains the terms: http://www.nba.com/article/2017/06/3...g-offers-guide

I'm not the best resource on this, admittedly. There are so many little exceptions to some of these rules it makes my head spin.

He probably can sign anywhere. However, if he is already planning on signing with the Knicks, it is because he isn't getting any offers that are better. They probably guaranteed him a spot and a little more than the league minimum for the year. They want to sign an experienced point guard, and most likely will use Ron in a utility role, 3rd PG role. Last year, he had to make the team and last half the year to get paid the entire year.

        • Free agency started 7/1, however, no contact can be signed until 7/7. They agree to a deal but can't sign. NBA has such a soft cap with so many exceptions. Since he hasn't signed, they can rescind the contract, but that room mid-level exception allows them to go over the cap to sign Ron. Couldn't go over the cap for Hardaway.

His best bet to play is some place like New York. He's not gonna sign w/ a contender after 1 year and be a major contributor unfortunately.

                • If the Knicks don't bring back Rose or sign a high end point guard (which they will struggle to do with the salary they paid THJ), Ron should be in line for quite a bit of playing time this year as long as the Knicks actually try to win instead of just trying to make the French kid into a star. But, they are still the Knicks, and Dolan still doesn't seem to care much about winning.

                  • Ron's contract - 2 years 8.9 Million including a player option

Restricted free agent Ron Baker's deal to stay with the Knicks: Two-years, $8.9M, including a player option, league sources tell ESPN.
The coaches should print out that tweet and take it with them as they are talking to recruits in the recruiting period starting tomorrow ... ha!
