  • There is a large sample size that says when Ron Baker is in a basketball game, the score goes in the right direction.

    • If you owned or were managing a business, you would hire Ron or Fred at the first opportunity and then figure out what to have them do. They are winners and workers.

      • I saw an article where the author said they didn't put much stock in a players +/-. That is why the NBA game has deteriorated in the past 2 decades. It has gone from a physical chess match to throwing some really athletic guys on the court for playground ball. There is no execution, no move, counter move, it's pass the ball to player A and let them shoot this time.
When Ron is in there, he forces them to trust the set and play it through. That's why he has a +30 over the last 24 minutes of play.

I'm not going to debate whether or not the NBA is better or worse than it used to be. I think there are many who would recognize players are better than ever before, offensive schemes are more complex than ever, and there's a huge amount of young talent right now.

But even if it is worse... It would not be due to one fan not trusting the plus/minus. Plus/minus ratings are not particularly nuanced, and the smaller the sample size, the less valuable it is as a tool. NBA fans have access to tons of more advanced stats.

          • I think the NBA puts the emphasis on 'how much are we paying this guy'? If it's a ton, then they play him... the certainly can't be basing PT on effectiveness, because Ron has earned minutes. That team functions better with his brain and hard work on the court.

Absolutely right. A player's plus-minus would be clouded with so much "noise" in terms of data (lineup combinations) that it's impossible to really use that as a good metric. Some other helpful metrics would be Box Plus-Minus (http://www.basketball-reference.com/about/bpm.html) or Adjusted Plus-Minus (http://nyloncalculus.com/2014/09/25/...ed-plus-minus/).

Now, these aren't perfect metrics, but they are a pretty decent measure of a player's impact. Box Plus-Minus doesn't take into account playing time, so you get things like the following, where Austin Reaves has the highest BPM among WSU players:

And yes, the NBA is better than it's ever been and any attempt to prove otherwise is futile because it just ain't true. /soapbox :)

              • Ron may never be a star. But he's definitely good enough to be on a team. And if he continues to work on his game, learn as much as he can and get experience, he will stick around a long time in the league.

                  • Ron should get some minutes tonight. They announced that Jennings is starting because Derrick Rose is not with the team tonight (not sure why)

Got a couple minutes in the first, back in halfway thru the second.

Ron with only 11 min so far, Knicks down 20+ and 2 Knicks ejected so far (including Melo). No idea what's go on in this game

                        • A significant benefit of the success Ron and Fred are achieving in the NBA today may very well result in making it easier and improve the chances for future Shockers to get drafted as well. In addition to their shattering the absurdity that four year collage graduates are too damn old to improve, they are further showing the NBA hierarchy that Coach Marshall's players are well rounded and skilled in the arts of defense and team play, and don't just rely on their offensive skills alone to survive.

                          • Interesting night in NY evidently. Lose to a bad New Orleans team badly. Derrick Rose is a no show. Supposedly the brass don't know where he is. Melo get ejected. O'Quinn gets ejected. Knicks are a mess.

Ron gets 25 minutes. 3-5 from the field for 6 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal, 2 pf and 2 to. Both turnovers were in the last 1.5 minutes of game.

                              • So is Rose throwing a mega toddler tantrum about getting benched and Ron getting a ton of love for being more successful that game?

Did Ron break the New York KnickerBakers?
