2016-17 Media Love Thread

I rooted against the Shox in the Cohen/Thompson era, bad guys playing bad basketball, more arrests than wins. I rooted again the Royals in the Tony Muser era, the Chiefs after Staley. And not fond of Shocker baseball these days. When you care about your team, it's impossible to root for a bad product. Sometimes it needs to get bad enough to invoke change.

I was a fan even in the Cohen/Thompson era and NEVER once rooted against the Shox. No matter how poorly they played. Unbelievable

I hear you, Speed, even though I was still rooting for Cohen's teams. And I've seen it elsewhere, too -- as an Alabama football fan I had really mixed feelings toward the end of Mike Shula's tenure; I know some Notre Dame backers who weren't onboard with Charlie Weis once the wheels fell off; and although I don't personally know any fans of the almighty baseball Longhorns, there were probably more than a few of that entitled crew rooting for whatever it took to dislodge the too-old Zenmaster this year.

Having said all that, it's still a pain in the butt when it happens, and no one except the most perverse can possibly enjoy rooting against his own team.

I've never heard of this website but the article provides much of what many of us have known about 3G and the Shox, particularly this edition. I would say, however, that the writer misses the mark about the lack of superstars, given what we know about MM. The reigning MVC FOTY should have a breakout year and I think is our next superstar. Granted, he's not yet proven to be the caliber of player Ron or Fred are, but he's just a sophomore and I think primed to show the country what he's made of.

By the end of the season, the team will be known as Shamet's and McDuffie's team. Those two will replace Ron and Fred as the face of the Shox.There's going to be a pretty salty player (Willis, Kelly, or Brown) on the bench because McDuffie will demand (and get) their minutes.

By March the "go to" lineup will be Shamet, Frankamp, McDuffie, Willis, Morris. If Brown and Kelly can hold on to their spots in the "go to" group, they will be having very, very good seasons.

I think Shaq is a good candidate for who owns the team. I'd lean more towards Shamet/Shaq as leaders for this year. If Shaq can elevate his leadership on the team, what a story to look at comparing his days of being left off the bus for an away game, to being a team leader.

If he isn't a leader on this team, Shaq has all the opportunity to be one. He's a veteran on this roster in terms of being in the system and knowing expectations, and should be setting the tone rather than following it.

I agree that Shaq can and will be a team leader. Shamet/McDuffie will be the guys getting the press. The "team leader" doesn't have to be the player getting the most media attention. The media will make Shamet and McDuffie "the face of WSU basketball".

I believe that Shaq will need to up his minutes (a lot) on the floor for this to happen. I'm talkin around 10 mpg worth. Most players need to improve their game to get more minutes. That's not Shaq's problem. He'll have to battle both stamina and keeping out of foul trouble for this to happen.

There is absolutely no reason that Shaq couldn't play 4/sit 4/play 4/sit 4/play 4 in each half for a total of 24 minutes. Assuming no improvement in foul rate, he would average 4.36 fouls in 24 minutes. So he needs to improve that slightly...nd the fouls can't be called in bunches.

I wonder how much of this comes from practices being an "almost anything goes" situation without zero fouls called. Maybe the practices need to alternate between calling fouls tuight one day and being a free-for-all the next. Don't want to stifle the ruggedness, but need to pick and choose the times for that.
