  • The 2017 Bracket Matrix

Matrix Last Updated: 02/04/17 10:57 AM (This was before yesterday's games with Illinois State.)

Illinois State was considered the MVC Conference champions on 86 Ballots and was a 12-Seed

WSU was in the Last Four-In and was on 55 Ballots and was an 11-seed.

This will change over the next week as more predictions will be updated.

    • Meh. Illinois State is clearly still the better team. At the very least, it's debatable...
I mean we split with them and their RPI is better so hanging a 41 point win on them at a critical point in the season really doesn't mean anything. They had a guy out too. I'm sure McIntosh is worth at least 50 points in that game.

      • Illinois State might still be listed as getting the auto bid on bracket projections since some bracket people use a simple RPI tiebreaker. That's fine. That's at least a consistent plan, so whatever.

I am probably not too interested in at-large possibilities. It WSU plays like last night or anything even close to that for the next month, I'm not sure anyone in MVC can stay within single digits, let alone beat WSU.

Still has ISUR over WSU and no sign of the Shockers in the first four or next four out. Jerry has teams like Arkansas, Rhode Island, Georgia Tech, Syracuse and Wake Forest ahead of WSU.
Arkansas is without a statement win and just lost to Mizzou ... You can safely ignore him. Oh and they lost to Oklahoma State by 28, so can't use that excuse either.

            Amateur hackjob. Nothing more.

I cannot believe CBS employs him.
            Deuces Valley.
            ... No really, deuces.

            • What sucks is that WSU always has to be great in early December because that's when they get their high RPI games. By the time they get clicking, like now, they don't get to play Louisville, OK state, Michigan st... They clearly pass the eye test. Just have to win out and no worse than valley title game. Hell, just go win the damn thing.

Having McIntosh out for them would be like having Frankamp out for us. We still win by at least 20.

                • Using some assumptions about seeding in St. Louis, here are some RPI projections based on possible outcomes:

28-5, RPI 35 - Win next 6, beat Bradley Friday, beat Loyola Saturday, lose to ISUr Sunday
28-5, RPI 37 - Win next 6, beat Bradley Friday, beat Loyola Saturday, lose to SIU Sunday
27-5, RPI 39 - Win next 6, beat Bradley Friday, lose to Loyola Saturday
26-5, RPI 42 - Win next 6, lose to Bradley Friday

27-6, RPI 39 - Win 5 of next 6, beat Bradley Friday, beat Loyola Saturday, lose to ISUr Sunday
27-6, RPI 42 - Win 5 of next 6, beat Bradley Friday, beat Loyola Saturday, lose to SIU Sunday
26-6, RPI 44 - Win 5 of next 6, beat Bradley Friday, lose to Loyola Saturday
25-6, RPI 52 - Win 5 of next 6, lose to Bradley Friday

As I've been saying, if the next loss doesn't come until the weekend in St. Louis, the Shox are in. If it comes sooner, they are likely out. If the Shox do lose a regular season game, they desperately need to get ISUr in the championship game in St. Louis if they want realistic at-large hopes to remain.

                  • A couple other items:

Colorado State has about a 1 in 3 chance of finishing top 100. Them giving WSU a top 100 road win would be huge.
Tulsa is about the same (1 in 3). Since that game was in Wichita, its probably less valuable than CSU, but would still be nice to have.

At least one of the brackets that was updated today without WSU is incorrect. He has ISU in both the NCAA and the NIT. So he probably meant to switch them out in the NCAA bracket with Wichita State.

                        • At this point I'm curious about the other end of the spectrum. Any guess at our seed if we win out, assuming ISU in the championship of STL?

My crystal ball says this would net us a 6/7 seed.

Thanks, and wouldn't that be nice? Does that factor in the typical yearly "screw WSU" committee bias?

Yea I tried to give it the inherent +1 seed line bump. We'd probably end up around #16 in the final AP Poll if we won out through Arch Madness, and let's say our KenPom would be in the neighborhood of 12 with an RPI in the mid-to-high 20s.

In the universe where non-Lawrence based Big XII teams don't bend over every time they have a chance at 1st and where Dan Muller suspends his players appropriately, that probably would get us a 5 seed.
