Right, really weird that the lack thereof is what fit perfectly into what the AAC needed. Who would have thought?

Had we spent millions and eventually fielded a team that would not be competitive for 5-10 years, our future would not nearly be as great as it is today and all future days.

Who knows, one day, we may again, sometime in the future, field a football team that will be competitive, but that's for another day in the future.
I'm just glad it worked out the way it did!

But we do have a surrogate football team. Go Navy!

      • I think you need an option: yes, but only if HCGM coaches it!

It's solid, just look at all the coaches that were tabbed for good P5 jobs.

          • Really looking forward to rooting for our AAC teams playing both FB and BB, except of course when they are playing the newest member to the conference, that is.

              • This AAC thing is such a dream, even for the WSU fans who wanted to start football. We may not do that, but we are now in a conference will all kinds of relevant football. We will develop interest in certain teams and have good reason to pay attention to football again. We went from wondering if we'd ever start an FCS team for a while to jumping straight into a great conference that competes with the P5. Lot's to follow and take part in. I will have no trouble adopting more then just Navy as "my" football team.

WSU may not have it's own team, but it does have football now for the football fans among us. What a difference... I won't even know what to do with myself next August. I really hope the AAC has a great year in football next year. Start it off for us with a bang.

                  • If you know that there is a 95% chance it cant sustain itself financially, where is the net benefit now that we got our conference move done?

If you can show a very very good chance that it will grow enrollment, or boosters and cash donations, etc then maybe. But on the face, its gonna lose money almost assuredly. And what if they suck and dont draw? I just dont see the net benefit given the risk. But I guess I could be persuaded.

Had we saved Football in 86 and gotten it up to at least the level of Tulsa, we would have likely stuck with them on their journey through the WAC, CUSA and to the AAC. I guess I look at it this way, we got into the AAC despite not having Football, but we got in with this group of schools about 25 years after we should have. Who knows where we would be had we kept Football. Also, for the the Newbs, despite not having football, our basketball program tanked in the late eighties and didn't recover until 2004. Not having football didn't help basketball for damn near 20 years. We are good in basketball now because we finally got a sports friendly President who hired an AD who did what he had to do, raising the money for Roundhouse Rennaisaunce and hiring Turgeon, to get the job done. Without that, we would be no different than Indiana State right now. However once the ball got rolling, people got on board, more money came in and then we landed the coach of a lifetime which boosters ponied up to keep around. Now, we have taken the next step by having a visionary for a President coupled with Marahall. IF...the money is there to support football in the AAC, then we are crazy to not investigate it and then bring it back if it can be done right.

We belong with schools like Cinci,Houston, Tulsa, etc and when there is more conference movement and there will be, we better be ready. Those schools aren't going to bring us along in a realignment scenario without football. We have an opportunity to cement ourselves in the upper tier of college sports. If there is a break away like many think will happen with the P5/P6, the AAC will likely finish above that Mendoza line and go along with name schools, especially if schools like Boise and BYU come along. I don't see a scenario where we are that valuable where would be the only program outside of the Big East to not have football and be in a power conference. Basketball will tank again, it is inevitable. Look at Houston, Memphis, UCONN, all schools with a much better tradition than us. We better have something other than basketball to offer when it happens and conferences start to shuffle.

Yes, that is a big IF. And based on the comments of Dr. Bardo and Darron Boatwright announcing the move to the AAC I get a strong sense that one of the things they found out during the last year and a half is that the money isn't there to support football. At least not at this point in time and apparently not around the corner either. They seemed almost giddy that WSU was able to accomplish this move without football.

                          • Bardo's end game is to grow WSU's enrollment and profile. If the moves made recently (plus the cumulative impact of his work to date) don't show the bump he's envisioning in those contexts, then you can rest assured football will come up again in a couple of years.

                            • It's kind of pointless to discuss WSU football at this time as Bardo made it clear any further discussion on this issue will be way down the road. I think that Bardo and Boatright want to make sure that we have the resources it takes to compete in the American in the sports that we currently have. We are going from being a big fish in the small MVC pond, to a medium sized fish in the bigger American pond.

                              • I believe that Bardo will bring back football in the next 10 years. I know all the obstacle. He will get it done.
