  • HCGM & Football Poll

I am curious about the temperature of Shockernet as it relates to football and the future of the basketball program. For simplicity I have kept the questions straight forward, ignoring the many scenarios and options.

Yes, I support bringing back Shocker football regardless of the circumstance.

Yes but...I only support bringing back Shocker football if it means retaining HCGM.

No, I do not support bringing back Shocker football, Gregg Marshall or no Gregg Marshall.

You do know, our last year of football we had the top D1 team in the state. (KU was KU, and KSU was mired in the muck)

Eric, I grew up attending Shocker football and my father was/is friends with a former receivers coach. I would be a season ticket holder.

If WSU brought back football and kept Marshall, WSU football would become KU, Jr. football.

Football coaches don't like to be number 2. KU will never be able to hire a decent coach because of the emphasis KU places on basketball. A worthwhile football coach seeing Marshall on the athletic department staff would run away from a job at WSU.

What I'm hearing, and correct me if I'm wrong, is that WSU should bring back football, but for it to work Gregg Marshall should be the coach?

Not sure how bringing back football would assure 3G does not go anywhere unless your assumption is that bringing back football gets us into a top tier basketball conference which it may or may not. And even if it does there are no assurances when it comes to retaining successful coaches. I don't anticipate 3G would agree to a contract that locks him in under any circumstances.

I think a better question is how much incremental financial support Shockernetters are willing to expend annually for football over and above what they are currently spending on Shocker Athletics. I could be wrong but my guess is that would indicate the Shockernetters would not be a terribly influential group. I know I would fit into that category.

That doesn't mean the big boys won't step up and make football happen. It just means our opinions are worth the digital space they occupy. So far a grass roots approach hasn't generated anywhere close to enough interest or financial commitment to justify bringing football back. Maybe Charles will step up since he doesn't seem to find any political candidates worth supporting.

My guess is that Bardo has been given an ultimatum; time specific.

I assume you mean by 3G, correct? Not sure I buy that, but I suppose anything is possible. Not sure that Dr. Bardo needs that push from 3G either.

That's ridiculous. GM can't coach both sports!

                        Steve Eck can coach basketball.

I guess I don't fully understand the question, but I am unwilling to reduce our support for basketball to field a football team.

While I don't think the two are necessarily mutually exclusive, I don't believe the economic side of things supports bringing back football.

If WSU brings back football, they need to hire Garin Higgins and let him do what he do. He can build a program from nothing.
