  • In the link provided, the Utah athletic director called it a neutral site event, which I thought was funny since the University of Utah is like a ten minute drive from the downtown arena in traffic. Then I remembered that all of those schools are fairly close to Salt Lake City. Emporia is about the closest WSU, KSU, and KU could have to a truly neutral area. Even if WSU were the one getting shafted in terms of neutrality, I would still give anything to set up a neutral tournament in KC each year.

Utah's model doesn't make as much sense for us since you'd have to either bring in a D2 school or have one team sit out each year. If you bring in a D2 school, one of the games is guaranteed to be uncompetitive (except for the years KSU is scheduled to play the D2 school). My dream scenario, the one I'd set up if I were running the athletics programs, would be a true round robin every year. Make it a three day weekend, and put it right in between the non-conference season and the start of the conference season so that the KU/KSU game counts as the kick-off to the Big 12 season. They'd alternate years giving up a home game for the tournament (i.e., year 1: KSU/KU play neutral and then in Lawrence; year 2: they play neutral and then in Manhattan). This way the tournament really only eats up one game on the schedule for both of them.

Topeka is kind of like Maui, after all.
What makes the Utah tourney work is that all 4 teams are from different conferences.

Nebraska - KSU - Mizzou - Wichita State at the Sprint Center would be fine with me.

Bring in Missou, Nebraska, Iowa, or Colorado as the other team. It could fit in with the tournament that KC is bringing in each year.

That would certainly be a good tournament to be a part of, but I don't think KU agrees to it (I'd say even more unlikely they agree to it than they are to agree to a round robin tournament with us in it).

If KU decides to put us on the schedule, it will be because their bandwagon fans start to understand KU is not head and shoulders above the other basketball programs in the state. When that happens, I could totally see them agreeing to a tournament for statewide bragging rights. I just don't see a compelling reason to bring in an outside school.

That said, if we're waiting on KU bandwagon fans to come to a reasonable conclusion, we better not hold our collective breath.

Yeah but how big are the mental hospitals in Manhatten and Lawrence????? State taxes would go through the roof supporting the cost of new institutions in those two towns. Maybe not worth it....

              • Fortunately for us, there ARE two schools in the Big 12 who have demonstrated that they do have the guts to play us. We effectively got most everything we could ask for out of the other two nearby schools from the Big 12 down south. If we can cultivate an ongoing relationship with all three Oklahoma schools (OU, OSU & Tulsa), we actually have a better situation than some kind of similar thing with KSU or KU. They may not like to hear it, but they are no better of a "get" than what we've already got lined up. I'm pretty sure Creighton is even about to come online pretty soon, so we may have a great few years of scheduling ahead. The schools in our state can avoid us all they want. Who cares... The rest of the region is getting together and leaving them behind.

                  • Figured this was the best place to put this. An Oklahoma State ball player who had just transferred has passed away after a workout at the football stadium. So awful.

"Everything came together very nicely for Tulsa last year. The Golden Hurricanes returned everybody from the year before and turned that into another 20 win season and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. The team lost to Michigan in the First Four, but the program is on solid ground. With that said, Tulsa has a lot of rebuilding to do this year. Seven of their eight players who averaged double digit minutes are gone. Tulsa will be hoping for more of a reloading season than a rebuilding season...."

It might actually be harder to corner KU again. Their fans couldn't handle losing to us for a second straight time and Self would be forced to schedule a series just to try to even things out. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Self or some other high ranking KU officials got the selection committee on the phone after they got eliminated by Nova and said "For the love of God, would you quit putting WSU in our region? We have plenty of brainwashed fans that will easily jump off our bandwagon in the event of losing to them again and we simply don't want that rivalry."

"Following a terribly disappointing 2014-2015 campaign, Southern Illinois started to turn things around last year. The Salukis went 22-10 overall and 11-7 in Missouri Valley Conference action. That is a far cry from the SIU glory days, but this group should be solid and looking for a middle of the table type of finish with a postseason tournament of some sort waiting for them if they want it. Sean O’Brien, a 6-7 senior, should emerge as the team’s top scorer after averaging 12.1 points and 6.0 rebounds last season. O’Brien needs to work on his outside shot still, or at least stop taking them, but he is pretty efficient and effective in the paint...."

                          • The schedule so far with one more game to be announced. Seems to me like that's one more non-conference game than we've played the last few seasons?

Nov. 5 - Augusta (Ga.) (exhibition)
Nov. 11 - South Carolina State
Nov. 13 - Long Beach State
                            Nov. 16 - Tulsa
Nov. 20 - Maryland Eastern Shore
                            Nov. 23 - LSU
                            Nov. 24 - Louisville/Old Dominion
                            Nov. 25 - Michigan State/VCU/Baylor/St. John's
Dec. 3 - at Colorado State
                            Dec. 6 - St. Louis
Dec. 10 - Oklahoma (in OKC)
Dec. 17 - Oklahoma State (at IBA)

The non-conference tournaments allow teams to exempt up to four games. We only played three games in our last two tournaments. IIRC, this season there's a "pre-tournament" game that is included as a part of the tournament, so we'll get four games out of it. At least, that's how I understood it.

Edit: Found the source - kansas.com reported that Jeff ******* says the LBSU game is part of the B4A tournament. http://www.kansas.com/sports/college...e83652912.html

                              • I figured that a D2 game would be one of the remaining two games. I would have rather seen a strong road game (to set up for a good game in CKA next season) than to play Maryland-Eastern Shore. Still, this seems like a pretty good schedule. Looking forward to tipping it off this fall.
