  • "At the start of the summer, Smith, Frankamp and Shamet appeared to be the candidates at point guard. Shamet switched his focus to shooting guard. Marshall feels better about the position than he did in June.
“Better, because I’ve seen a couple of guys do it,” Marshall said. “You’ll see a little more out of (Frankamp). (Smith) is very, very, very quick and fast with the ball. He’s going to have to harness all that and be a great defender on the ball and get us some easy baskets. He’s got some superlative qualities.”
Shamet’s track may be similar to that of former Shocker Toure Murry, who picked up point-guard duties later in his career.
“Landry is a better two-guard and even a better three-man than he is a point guard right now,” Marshall said."

This sounds to me like Marshall really likes Smith. He's basically saying the guy many thought would be point guard (Shamet) is now 3rd and effectively getting allowed to focus on the shooting guard position. He did have reasonably nice things to say about Frankamp, too, but it sounds more like as a reliable, trustworthy backup. That's no small thing.

Marshall knows point guards. We have had great point guards for the entire era. If Marshall likes Smith enough already to be moving Shamet over somewhere else, we may have a stud on our hands. I thought Shamet was our PG at the end of last season.

Now, I think it's safe to say that the guy who better bring his A game is Zach Brown if Shamet is moving in that direction. If Willis forces his way into a starting role, it ain't going to be Brown over McDuffie at the 3.

I was very surprised not to hear JRS mentioned in the PG mix. :) Marshall is keeping him on the down low as our secret weapon...

I wonder how different last year would have gone if we had Shamet in the tournament.

Having Shamet likely would have helped us avoid the NCAAs play-in game shenanigans altogether, but it certainly would have helped to spread the minutes around in those first two games as well. So it goes. At the end of the day, tough to feel too bad about winning 2 games in the tourney. 9 games in 4 years. What a crazy ride. Hope it keeps rolling.

          .
I would read it a little differently than you. Marshall likes both Frankamp and Smith but at this time, he trusts Conner more. I think that he will begin in the starting role tomorrow (I could be wrong).

Never the less, he also said this.

This season’s team reminds Marshall of the 2011-12 team that thrived on balanced scoring, or maybe the 2011 NIT champions who went five-deep into the bench.
There may be some extreme competition to see who the Top 10 players are. Hamilton, Nurger, and maybe one or two others will be competing for that #10 spot off of the bench. I would think that Conner, Daishon, Landry, Allen, Duff, Brown, Morris, and perhaps Kelly and Willis are pretty sure Top 10ers.

Brown will get plenty of time either as the 1st or 2nd three man. It all depends on McDuffie's health and whether McDuffie plays any 4 this year.

I like Conner for that spot, too. He's spent a lot more time in our system for sure. Smith would have to be awfully good to show up and claim the spot that fast. I think my favorite part about the whole thing is that the combination of these two guys was enough to give Marshall the confidence to start focusing on the 2 with Shamet. That's gotta be a pretty good sign at PG.

                  • I found it very telling that at Ron and Fred's camp, Willis, who never was on a team with those two, was the one guy who came to both days of the camp.

He had a great personality and really seemed like a high character, great kid. Marshall likes those guys. I see him getting a lot of time. I just hope it's at the four and McDuffie at the three with Landry and Conner and Shaq.

Kelly, Nurger, Brown, Allen, Smith, Hamilton off the bench.

And Barney, Zach Bush, John Robert Simon and Kaelen Malone against Missouri State. Still win by 30

What I'm really liking is the fact that Conner and Smith appear to be polar opposites. Conner is lights out shooter that is secure with the ball and has shown flashes of being a facilitator. Smith is the lightning fast guard that is going to get by people and be a threat to drive. Our game flow could very well change based on who is in the game. This would have to be a nightmare to prepare for.

Until Shaq can consistently show he can play 25+ minutes, Willis will see time (10-15 mpg) at the 5 unless Nurger proves himself more valuable on the court than most of the "others" you listed.

                          • If Hamilton and Willis happen to be on the floor at the same time, is there any chance the other team will get a rebound during that time?

That's all true but I think HCGM is just as concerned with who defends the opposing PG as who runs the offense.

Daishon Smith's first job is to never let a PG like Wes Washpun take over a game.

                              • I think some people on here did this last year, but I came up with some themed lineups for the season:

                                East Coast Lineup
                                1 – Daishon Smith (FL)
                                2 – CJ Keyser (MD)
                                3 – Markis McDuffie (NJ)
                                4 – Rashard Kelly (VA)
                                5 – Eric Hamilton (GA)

                                Midwest Lineup
                                1 – Conner Frankamp (KS)
                                2 – Landry Shamet (MO)
                                3 – Peyton Allen (IL)

                                5 – Shaquille Morris (OK)

The Red Dirt Lineup (all from Arkansas, Oklahoma or Texas)

                                3 – Zach Brown

                                5 – Darral Willis Jr.

                                Kerry Rosenboom Projects Lineup
                                1 – Austin Reaves

                                The 5x400 Relay Lineup
