In all fairness he said the team that went to the nit the year before was not locked in and really didn't act like they wanted to be there probably due to the slight of the ncaa which was why Marshall wanted them to vote because if they weren't going to put forth the effort he didn't want to go through the motions.

Sorry for the lengthy post but wanted to share. Had a chance to listen to the replay of Coach Marshall's interview with Mark Packer on his afternoon Sirius College Sports Today radio show this morning. For those of you who aren't familiar with The Packman, he's from South Carolina and is a HUGE fan of Gregg Marshall and the Shockers. I'm pretty sure they play golf on occasion, or at least have played together at least once, based on their conversations. They first met when Marshall was coaching Winthrop. He has 3G on his show throughout the college basketball season.
I think this might be the first time he's had 3G on the show this season (he concentrates on football up until the Bowl season is over so not being a college football fanatic, I don't listen until the basketball season starts). Talked quite a bit about the non conference losses during which he specifically stated that Landry Shamet was playing a lot of minutes in place of Fred during Fred's injury and how Shamet's broken foot and the fact that Frankamp wasn't yet eligible meant he was without his primary back up for point guard. I think there had been debate here on SN whether or not Landry is the next point guard. That answered it for me.
Packer then brought up how crazy it was to not see FVV's name on the list of ten finalists for the Cousy award. That spurred about a three minute discussion of Fred, his importance to the team, the fact that he was left off of Team USA and now being left off of the Cousy award list just, much to the chagrin of the rest of the Valley, added fuel to Fred's competitive fire. (I feel, sorta, sorry for the dawgs tonight because I have a feeling Fred is going to go off again.)
The other thing 3G stated was that the luxury of having Fred run point is that Fred's not an assistant coach, or a coach, but is a head coach and Marshall said he could just leave the bench, go to the locker room and no one would ever notice because Fred would be able to finish the game. This is a similar statement Mark Adams made during Sunday's broadcast so this is a theme 3G is obviously sharing with the media during interviews and conversations. Said he doesn't know if Fred is interested in being a coach after a long professional career playing but that he believes Fred would be an excellent coach.
Packer ended the interview by congratulating Coach on tying Ralph Miller's 220 wins record and acknowledging that he would surpass him tonight. They chatted about that for the last minute of what was about a seven minute interview.
All in all, a really nice interview on national radio by a guy who actually knows the team and understands what they are accomplishing in Wichita.

In regards to Landry, was it clear that he meant Landry was the backup point guard? The way you phrased it, it almost sounds like Frankamp is the primary back up. I just didn't know if it was also ambiguous on the radio show or if it was clear he definitely meant Landry. I am in the camp that isn't certain Landry will be our next point guard, but I start salivating at the thought of a point guard as athletic as Landry (though, admittedly, CF is actually surprisingly athletic).

I like to win more than 99.9% of the people in this world, but he may top me." -- Gregg Marshall 12/23/13 :peaceful:

Remember when Nancy Pelosi said about Obamacare:
"We have to pass it, to find out what's in it".
A physician called into a radio show and said:
"That's the definition of a stool sample."

I have to say the context was that at the beginning of the season, Marshall said that he had an extremely deep guard rotation, particularly at the point, that would only get deeper once Frankamp was eligible on 8 December. He went on to say that once Fred had gone down with his hamstring injury Landry had already moved into the starting lineup and was averaging 10 points a game but then he broke his foot (his words). He didn't mention Baker during this topic (I don't think Ron was mentioned at all during the interview. Packer was really interested in Fred and what he means to the team.)
As for whether or not Marshall considered Frankamp the primary backup at point, it was hard to say one way or another. But it was clear he felt Landry was playing well and it hurt the team when he broke his foot. He did also add that Landry may redshirt, which is nothing we haven't already heard from Marshall. It wasn't a definitive "he WILL redshirt."
I looked for a podcast but I'm in the office so I can't spend as much time as I'd like and my five minute search yielded nothing.

WICHITA, Kan. -- Gregg Marshall talked about his long coaching journey from young assistant to WSU's career wins leader, Landry Shamet's looming decision, the virtues of VanVleet, and his Super Bowl pick during his weekly press conference. Plus, Shocker guard Ron Baker offered thoughts on Marshall's big accomlishment and how this year's team stacks up to the 2014-15 bunch. Read on for the transcript.
Basically says, he can redshirt, but he can also help us.

What I like about both CF and LS is that they both can play both positions. Right now we have Ron that is a SG that can play a little point and Fred that only plays point. As much as we will miss Fred, I think having CF and LS starting at the 1-2 will be just fine.

Yeah, I think we've seen, particularly with the recent spate of recruits, that Gregg likes the combo guards and lots of them. And I will say that Fred can definitely move over to shooting guard but his point guard skills are unlike anybody else in the country right now and it makes little sense to use him any other way.
