I disagree that UNI was a bad matchup this year.
Here are WSU's 3 point shooting performances, and then margin of victory/defeat, in the 3 games this year. Note that WSU shoots 33% on the year, even after including Saturday's brick-fest.
road - 8/15 (53%) ..... +19
home - 7/31 (23%) ..... -3
neutral - 2/24 (8%) ..... OT -5
WSU would have won at UNI even if they went 4/15. The Shox dominated that game.
WSU wins either of the other 2 games if they shoot 25% or better from 3. Heck, they win Saturday's game if they shoot 3/24 (13%).
UNI didn't force WSU into tough 3s. If anything, the 3s WSU took in these losses were better than average looks. UNI played well enough to have a chance, but the fact remains that WSU goes 3-0 vs UNI merely by shooting BELOW AVERAGE, say 25-30%, on open 3s.

Doesn't the NCAA now own the NIT, and you can no longer refuse to play in the NIT? You can only refuse the CBI or CIT, I think.Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind. ~Dr. Seuss

If we don't make the Big Dance we can blame the bad luck of injuries to Fred, Anton and Landry but the bottom line is that we had our destiny in our own hands and quite frankly stumbled badly in the 3 losses to Illinois State and UNI. 3 games we could have and should have won considering the defense we played. I still think the Shocks will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament but if they don't the Shocks only have themselves to blame. A victim only of their own performance. Perhaps the pressure of having no room for error got to them. I don't know.
If I am wrong and the Shocks are left out of the NCAA I can get into the NIT. In fact, NIT games at home can be fun as hell and the worse thing we can do as fans is to turn our back on the Shocks. I don't think that will happen either. I am confident Shocker fans will be there for the Shocks come hell or high water.
If, as I expect (maybe hope), the Shocks do receive an at-large bid I would think that the valve on the pressure cooker the Shocks have been operating under will open wide and hopefully allow them to attack the NCAA free and loose.

Good article about the Shoxs and the bubble. It basically state that the Shox are an interesting case, one where if you look strictly on the resume of the record WSU is probably on the outside looking in, however if you look at the whole picture and ask if WSU is one of the top teams in the country and those metrics, WSU should be in.
