But like I said, this is my last post in this thread. I've made more enemies than converts, so I'll stop while I'm not significantly behind.

In the meantime we need to be patient and love every second of what Marshall is doing for our fine school.

And by the way, back in @WstateU:'s day there were streakers and hippies ... so they weren't really better, just nuder and didn't bathe as much.
@jdshock:, I don't think you've made any enemies and have stated your position very well. It's not necessarily about winning over anyone, but getting respect for how you present yourself and position. IMO, I believe you are not significantly behind and there's no problem in stopping as you've covered the subject from your perspective.

I liked this discussion (and the generally pleasant level of decorum) and thought that both sides have valid points.

@Kung Wu:'s statement may prove to be right (at least the first 3 sentences). Both Bardo's and Marshall's continued presence and direction may make this kind topic disappear.

      • I have to admit that I did not attend Shocker games while I was a student (1968-72) at Wichita State. I was paying my own way and working 40+ hours per week at a minimum wage job. Around $2.00 per hour back then. Got married in 1971 after being engaged for a year and a half and bought my first house. Games on the radio (when I wasn't working) were the closest I got. I don't remember that I was all that unusual back then. Have no idea what the student section was like in those days. Definitely a commuter school but I graduated with a degree in Accounting and zero student debt and I'm grateful that WSU allowed me that opportunity. Otherwise, I probably would not have gone to college. Not sure I even new any other students that were not commuters but us po' boys kind of hung together.

I think the University has come a long way since those days and the future looks about as bright as it ever has right now. My guess is the student section today is 10 times more impressive than it was in my day (as is the campus in general).

Man those were the days. Back when a bird bath was a good place to wash-up and brush our teeth. :highly_amused:

Give me screenshots from games at 50 programs (@shoxlax, name 75 since you said it's an understatement) that don't have empty seats in their student section over Thanksgiving break.

If you're able to do that, address the second portion of my argument which is that we are historically a commuter campus. Show me a single other commuter campus that has similar student support at games.

Lay off the students. College basketball is about the students. When you forget that, you're just watching a worse version of the NBA. If it's purely about enjoying watching athletes in their prime playing basketball, watch the NBA. I stand by my point that we have a good student fanbase and it is getting better.
Sorry, my understatement quote referred to his last sentence. I have no idea what our student body ranks and neither do you. The whole image that Dr Bardo is trying to project is not one of a commuter campus but I will tell you this-commuter campus or not and the game being about the students or not, it is punkish and inconsiderate to hoard tickets you are not going to use. If my kid did that and I was paying for their tuition they would get an ass ripping like no other. You want to talk about the students-that's not fair to their fellow student athletes that bust their ass every day in preparation and anticipation of playing in front of a full house. I could care less if ten students showed up-if all ten said they were going in the first place. People will use those seats, Thanksgiving break or not.

It isnt better now than it was in the 80s and we had to pay for our tickets outright. But the impressive of the student section is irrelevant to the original conversation. People have spun this in to a conversation about the quality and content of the student section when it really doesn't apply.

Everybody is missing the point-use tickets you take, students or not. Don't be a jackass and inconsiderate *****. Simple as that.

Wufan has a good question: if the student seats are truly GA, there ought to be a way for people who will actually show up and use them to access to them.
"Students apprenticing to be corporate fat cats" may be the line of the young season. The good news, I guess, is that for every empty seat lies an opportunity for a parking attendant from a volunteer organization to sit after halftime.

                          • Is there no way to find out which students aren't using the tix and simply tell them they don't get any more? (may have already been asked and answered)
