  • Well they're at it again (sorry in advance for the rant). My wife and parents went to Emerson Biggins West to watch the Shox play tonight. We've gone there a few times to watch the games this year and generally had a good experience. Tonight was quite different. My wife called the bar at 5:30 to confirm that they would be playing the sound for the WSU game and they said they would (you can see where this is going). She then arrived at the bar over an hour before tipoff to get a prime spot in front of one of the big screens. As expected, they were playing the KU vs WVU game prior to the start of our game. About 20 minutes before our game we again asked our waitress if they would be playing the WSU game sound and they said they would. And sure enough, about 5 minutes before our game they actually started playing the WSU sound! But then, inexplicably, they switched back over to the KU game right as ours was starting!

We called over the waitress and then the manager. They explained that it was a predominantly KU crowd (not actually true) and thus would be playing the sound for that game. They offered to move us over to the other room where they were playing the WSU sound. By this point, there were no spots near the big screens and, while the WSU sound was on, it was virtually inaudible and covered up by the sound of the KU game. I walked around and there was maybe one table that could have heard the WSU game.

The manager never apologized and was very aggressive. I'll admit that our group was pretty heated up and could have approached the situation more delicately, but the managers response was completely inappropriate. When I suggested that we wouldn't be paying for our food, she was floored and completely rude. I understand it's a petty request, but we wouldn't have otherwise gone to Emersons without confirmation that they'd be featuring the WSU game. So we felt completely duped and missed a good chunk of the game.

Apologies for turning Shockernet into my own pity party, but I just hate to see local establishments disrespect our local team and fans. Please take this into consideration when choosing where to watch the games.

    Go Shox!

      • I'm sorry you gave them another chance. Don't fall for it again.

That place is a pit stain. They seem to be more slimier than the Steven family. And really, the place just sucks in general, from the food on down.

        ... No really, deuces.

I had a similar experience a couple of years ago and I will NEVER go there again. I tell anyone I see not to go there because of said problems and utter ignorance of the management of that crap hole.

          • Unfortunately, I believe the ownership as well as the majority of his "staff" are KU fans. It's more of a party palace for him and his buddies to watch their beloved FuKu games than anything else.

On a positive note, I tried out the Blarney Stone (in the old Larry Buds out east). If anything they were at the other extreme. Shocker sound was on for all the pregame stuff and was on all the big screens and almost all the small screens. KU game had a couple small TVs...it was nice.

Gotta have at least one small tv on KU in case they lose. :)

If I owned a WSU sports bar, I'd get on the microphone and announce to the shocker fans that I was switching the big screen to the KU game for the last 10 seconds of regulation so we can enjoy the loss.

                • Skimmed over their recent Facebook reviews. Looks like they make an effort to put WSU first. I see a 1 star review from a KSU fan who wanted to watch the KU/KSU game a few days ago but WSU game was on instead. From the looks of it they divide the bar and restaurant so both games can be played...just have to make sure you're sitting in the right place.

Then they should come to grips with their cake-and-eat-it-too split personality and separate the bar into two different establishments. I'd recommend they rebrand the KU side the "Blue Oyster Bar". It really works on multiple levels!

A house divided against itself cannot stand. Somebody important said that. Anybody wanna guess who?

I was there as well last night just because BWW was too packed. We sat in the non bar side and asked the waitress right when we sat down (6:45) if they were going to have the WSU game on and she said yes on this side. They divided about half the TV's between the two games and did have the sound on the side I was on. Having sound on for two different games in the same bar is not a very good idea as everything sounded a little jumbled. When we got there, wasn't any spots in the bar and just glancing it looked half WSU and half KU on that side. The non bar side was definately more WSU people. Problem with West side of town there isn't very many good sports bar places that have decent food and family friendly.

Can somebody with some dough get on this problem and fix it?

Decent food, family friendly, and sports bar places RARELY all fit together! Gotta pick your priorities!
