  • WSU remains a #1 in today's CBS Bracketology.

    Comment

    • WSU is now a #1 seed in Lunardi's latest Bracketology, advancing to #4 on his S Curve (Michigan State is #5, Florida is #6).

We are now a consensus 1 seed in the major bracketologies. Pretty cool.

Others of note: SLU is #27 (7 seed), Tennessee is #39 (10 seed), and BYU is first four out.

          • Arizona, barring an unexpected collapse is a #1 seed. They play in a conference that will not challenge them. Then we have three #1 seeds up for grab. Contending for those seeds are KU (#1 SoS), Wichita State (least losses), Syracuse, MSU, Michigan, Florida, SDSU, and Villanova.

KU's high SoS gives them the widest margin of error. Ours gives us the least. If KU wins the Big 12 with two or less losses, I cannot see them getting kicked out of the top seed line. Syracuse has a good chance of taking the third #1 seed, but they also have a slim margin of error with another very weak SoS. Michigan State has too many injuries, I think they lose enough games to go to a #2 or #3 seed. Michigan needs to make up a lot of ground, probably also a #2 seed.

I think our threats are Florida, Villanova, and SDSU. Florida is in the same situation we were in last year, starting the year without their full team. Just like we get the benefit of the doubt and got a #9 seed instead of a #10 or #11 seed, I think Florida will the benefit of the doubt with their early losses. They are the biggest threat because of how hot they have been since beating KU (see a trend coming?). We need Florida to lose out to UK in the SEC, or at least lose 2-3 more games to take them out of contention.

Next up is Villanova. They also have a KU victory. Unlike Florida, they have a slimmer margin of error because they have no such injury or suspensions concerns, and because they play in a non-power conference. They need to basically go undefeated through the rest of the Big East to steal the last spot.

Finally, SDSU. With a win @ KU and only a home loss against the #1 team, their schedule will win the eye contest over us. We need them to lose a couple more games to stop the narrative from building. If it is a contest between two non-power conference teams with sterling records, SDSU's signature victory and signature loss will be hard to overcome.

            So:

            Arizona - Lock
KU - Can lose 2-3 more games and retain the top seed
Syracuse - Can lose 1-2 more games
Florida - Needs to get a share of the SEC title
Michigan - Needs to win the B1G outright
Villanova - Needs to win the Big East by a game or two
MSU - Improbable (too many injuries)
SDSU - Can't lose more than a game
Us - Need to go undefeated

            • A 7 loss Kansas team is likely not a #1 seed.

A six loss Kansas team, yes, but seven losses even with their SoS is too many. IMO.

It's amazing where we are. I remember when cracking the top 50 was fun and then arguing about the bubble and who will be in or out.

Now, being in the dance or not isn't even a topic anymore. Now we are checking stats and records trying to see if we are #3 or #5!!

                  My goodness.

I remember when receiving votes was news. Being ranked at all was a triumph. I am in awe of this current program.

                  • When MT came on board I thought I would be content to have a top 50 team that represented the U well and competed in the top part of the Valley. Well now we have a team that is in the top 3/4 and represents the U with class. I'm a happy camper.

It was a FANTASTIC day to be a Shocker Today. It was a FANSTASTIC day to be a Shocker yesterday. It was a FANTASTIC day to be a Shocker 10 days ago. Not too long ago there was a collective cringe from Shocker Nation when the Shocks finally got ranked...invariably we would lose our next game and fall back out. That was then...this is now--and how sweet it is.
