A KU low and WSU high does not automatically mean that WSU was a vastly superior program to KU, and it definitely doesn't mean that WSU had nothing to gain by playing the series.

WSU may have been stronger (very briefly), but they still had something to gain from playing KU. The "nothing to gain" part came solely from shoxtop and was very misleading.
Look, I don't want to go all Sith Lord on you, but you really, REALLY need to learn how to give in to your hatred. True hatred comes from the heart, not the mind. It can come shooting out your arse or bubble up out of your mouth in languages you didn't realize you know, once you learn how to master it. Harvest it, focus it, channel it, and best of all spew it at a chickenhawk!

You can practice tomorrow by hating the Michigan incompetents for being too sloppy and stupid to take care of business and punk the idiotic chickenhawks out of the tournament, when KU advances.

Maybe you're from Missouri or have no state pride, but bastardizing the term Jayhawk which means something beyond basketball teams and college mascots to a lot of Kansans may be one reason you seem to come across KU fans who feel they have you outclassed.

KU has done more to disgrace the heritage of the name Jayhawk than anything nicknames WSU fans give to them ever could.

Let's face it, a KU degree is going to get more respect nationally than a WSU degree even if it would have came from the exact same med school with the same teachers and facilities.
DING DING DING. We've gotten to what may be the root of the issue for me personally. You say, "let's face it, a KU degree is going to get more respect nationally than a WSU degree..." I just think that's KU arrogance combined with some good old fashioned eastern Kansas ignorance. In Kansas there is a perception that this is true -- that KU is a significantly better school. I believe that the reason for that perception is because of many of the issues brought up in this fine thread. Nationally, though, KU looks the same as WSU. They're both state schools. KU is far from a research powerhouse like Indiana, Michigan, or some of the other schools in the Big 10. It's certainly not as good as the privates like Duke. Nationally the perception is the same, and in some areas it actually tends to favor WSU. WSU's business school and engineering school are both ranked significantly higher nationally than KU.

That said -- even if you WERE right that KU's degree gets more respect nationally (which obviously, I think you are dead wrong about), the fact of the matter is that if WSU were allowed the medical school and doctoral programs that wouldn't be the case. KU's medical center in Wichita is so dang good because it's in the heart of a major city, not in Lawrence. WSU's program would have crushed the one in Lawrence. I know you say you are a WSU fan, but you really seem to be a KU homer.

For the record, the only point of my post was to challenge the idea that KU only scheduled WSU when WSU was down because that just isn't historically accurate.

I was not making any judgement about WSU's motives for scheduling KU or suggesting that they were doing the same thing.

That's a solid position. I'm just saying, insulting a part of someone's heritage they may feel strongly about is probably not the best way to earn their respect. Whether you go searching for enemies or friends, you'll probably find them.

I'm not an expert on what makes a good medical school, but I assume you are right and being in a larger metro area is beneficial, thus the reason KU wanted one in Wichita. I also agree that WSU is much better than KU in certain programs. I have a WSU degree in one of those fields where WSU can claim an edge, although I'm not really qualified yo judge that personally either. I do disagree with you about the two schools having the same respect nationally though. Right out of college, far from Kansas, I had at least two interviewers ask if my business degree was a four year, accredited degree. Now I put that mostly on dumb as rock interviewers, but I wondered at the time if this idiot isn't sure if Wichita State gives out real degrees or not, how many employers are skipping over my resume altogether out of concern for what school I attended? Would that have happened if I went to KU? I don't know. As for being a KU homer, I don't know what that means, I am neither a KU alum or from or living in Lawrence. I am however big fan of KU's sports teams as well as WSU's. There's room enough in my heart for both teams, which I guess is the general idea behind my posts in this thread. Geez this game needs to start, I'm glad to have a season for a change where there's something besides KU to talk about this late, and here I am talking about KU.

Nationally and locally, potential students are going to refer to national publications, word-of-mouth, and other forms of reference material when reviewing a university's credentials. Both WSU and KU offer great programs and each school offers something that the other doesn't. However from a national perspective, KU beats us by a considerable margin.

U.S. News ranks KU as a top 100 university while they have WSU in their second tier (which means did not rank in their top 500). We all know that these rankings are skewed but your average everyday high school kid is simply going to walk down to their local Barnes and Noble and pick up a copy of the latest U.S. News magazine and simply look at the numbers. KU is also a member of the Association of American Universities which if you go to AAU.edu will see that it is made up of the top 62 leading research universities in the U.S. and Canada. I don't know how this organization determines how the top 62 are selected, but looking at that list there are some major educational players among it.

Unfortunately, fair or unfair and how hard we question the validity of being ranked in a certain position, the number that is beside a university in some magazine or internet site is a huge influence on one's perception of how prestigious a university is. Your average person is going to see just a number and believe that number to be gospel. Your average person is not going to take the time to really get in depth on how well a particular school educates its students.

WSU would no doubt be higher on these rankings had it not been the constant subversive meddling by KU to keep WSU from improving itself.

It should be worth mentioning that KU's med school is in KC and not Lawrence. Obvious Wal-Mart KU fan we are dealing with here.
