I support the KU hate, but we have bigger fish to fry this weekend. We can make megathreads about it in the offseason.

Oh, and the bit about Wichita State being given the death sentence for giving a player a coat and offering some parents plane tickets to watch their kids play... Wichita State was banned from post-season play when they had not only one of the best teams in their history, but the nation. They were pre-season #1 in the nation. We not only missed a national championship opportunity, but future NBA players left the program because of the sanctions.

While it's no excuse for fudging on the rules, do you think lil' ol' Wichita State in the 1980's was the only team in the NCAA's committing violations? LMFAO! I can assure you that KU was doing equally wrong at the time or worse. Hell, The NCAA charged KU with "a lack of institutional control" violation within its athletic department from 1997 to 2003. That's a huge charge. KU merely received a slapped hand.

KU blowing the whistle on WSU in the 80's was akin to a rival mob leader calling out a hit with paid cops. The NCAA committee on infractions was only a short drive from KU's campus (convenient huh?) and was loaded with KU staffers. No conflict of interest right?

This talk is keeping my mind off the game tonight. That is a good thing for my blood pressure.

I have nothing against ku. I know many wichita ku fans and they are cool and we all live in harmony. But there is something about the kc area fans that seem arrogant that I don't like. Other than conference games KU played away from home/kc only twice I think. They have earned the right I guess to pick their own schedule. They don't really want a rival as it would bring them "down". I've accepted it I guess but I can't help but think the fans/tax bases that support these schools wouldn't be fired up for a game against each other.

But we were hammered for what were pretty minor offenses in basketball if I remember correctly. Worse has been nothing more than a slap on the wrist. Being reported by KU and the lead investigator being a KU grad causes many to be a little suspect. The worst offenses were with the football team, but it was basketball that paid the ultimate price.

I have no love for the NCAA, one of the most corrupt institutions this country has produced and I'm too young to remember specifics of the charges so I won't argue with you on those points. But my mom never gave much credence to the "but everybody else was doing it" defense, so I tend not to either.

Ok Roy, when Maurice Evans signed with WSU instead of you. You cried about it and it triggered an NCAA investigation that lasted for 2 yrs (IIRC)

I am really enjoying this thread. Great information, like the last poster, I think the Wichita area KU and WSU fans have a decent coexistence and mutual support for both programs, but based on the Phog.net. alot of hate comes from the KC area fans. I really don't care about it, but it is very comical when they start the anti-WSU/Wichita threads. Some are very smug, I would venture that some of the smuggest ones probably didn't even attend KU.

Let us also remember that the "investigation" was completed in RECORD time and that punishment was both immediate and punitive. I'd be happy to be corrected by an official time line, but I don't believe the investigation started before the fall 81 school year and by Christmas, the season was over.

At the same time, KU was cheating their asses off. Paying players cash. When it came time for them to pay, surprisingly, no punishment was levied until Danny was out of school....strange how that happens? Larry leaves town...1 year while they "transition" between coaches.

                        2 sets of rules.

Sometime I'd LOVE to see how the whole thing unfolded. Why didn't WSU appeal? Could they? Did they? If so, did the NCAA convene an immediate hearing along the lines of a scene out of "Casino" when Sam Rothstien was denied a gaming license? You know if Syracuse (for instance) was in hot water, they'd appeal until after the season was over (at least) and could better handle the punishment.

Don't forget that ***** Dreiling who left WSU for KU who was big time BUTTSTUNG for losing out that battle. How'd his transfer go? Did he have to sit out?

This makes me even more fired up to see WSU go all the way. Let's not settle for the Great Eight, let's take the whole damn thing and have KU beg to play WSU.

JoCo is an odd place. They are essentially a suburb of Kansas City MISSOURI, a state most KU fans rightfully can't stand. Additionally, while KC is a nice place, it doesn't compare well with other "major league" cities and is in fact considered a rather small market and irrelevant.
Thus, you have a suburb of a city in a state (Mo) that KU fans hate and a metro area that is looked down on by most other major league metro areas. Therefore, JoCo latches on to KU as a source of pride and endeavors to put down anything else in Kansas that doesn't have to do with KU. JoCo has no identity except KU.

In reading through this thread, I agree with the perception that there is a lot of the bias from the KBoR towards WSU and their work behind the scenes has certainly negatively affected WSU and its athletic programs. Having said that, I wish WSU, local leaders, and local corporations would stop being a victim, grow a pair, and stand up for the university and their city.
Additionally, this is WSU's time and attention and focus should be placed on the Shockers advancing. Don't make this about KU and don't invite the conflict to the Shocker party.
Here's hoping KU and WSU meet for the national championship game.

                              Go Shox!

I think the KU-WSU animosity stems almost primarily from the arrogance and dismissiveness of many that are part of the KU "family."

There are many KU graduates though, that are Shocker fans too and get a bit embarrassed by the attitudes of some of their brethren to WSU.

FWIW, my oldest son is a sophomore at KU and is proudly wearing Shocker stuff today. He said he saw several others on KU's campus today wearing Shocker gear.

He chose KU over WSU primarily b/c he had a bunch of friends going to KU and none to WSU. I can assure you that he has none of the KU holier-than-though attitude.

He works at the pizza joint in the Oread Hotel and is wearing his WSU stuff to work. I'd like to get a picture of that.
