  • I was talking to some of the students after the Creighton game and was told that some of their signs were taken away because security didn't like them. One student at the Illinois State game was kicked out because he threw paper when we scored our first basket and a couple of pieces went onto the floor. Not on the game floor, but where the police officers stand in front of the student section. When the white paper was being handed out for the Creighton game, the security was going crazy worrying that it would be torn up and thrown. I think that the lack of creativity has occurred because the school will not allow alot of things now that we used to do years ago.

    • I just now got through reading this entire thread. Just a couple of quick comments.

On the 10.1 out of bounds call at the end of the half. I haven't watched the replay, but as the ball went out of bounds, I wondered if the shot clock might have expired. What bothered me is that after the call was reversed, CU was allowed to substitute players in that were not waiting to come in when the whistle was blown stopping play. Had the call that it was CU ball when the whistle was blown. Doug would not have been in the game. (Coaching error on CU -- CU was defending and would get an offensive opportunity, Dougie should have been at the scorer's table). The rules permit this, I guess, but they should not, IMHO. Of course CU had not used the mandatory time-out, so they could have been charged a timeout and it would not have affected anything. Just bugged me at the time.

I loved the students waving the white sheets of paers. Made me think a whiteout would look really good at Koch.

I cannot locate the quote of the announcer saying that CU was more versatile and would be favored in Omaha, but CU has one way to win, shoot a high percentage. WSU has many ways to win, shoot high percentage, low turnovers, rebound, or play defense. When we are on and combine several of those ways, we are unstoppable. That is versatility.

      • I don't think asking permission was ever a strong suit of creative and rowdy students.

The student section used to tear up "Sunflowers" student newspaper. and make confetti but they put a stop to it when some people would throw it on the court. I remember when Turg told us to stop the who cares, and so whats... not sure how long that had been going on (at least 6 years)but I'm glad is back.

I hope that the students holding the paper during opponents' free throws becomes a new tradition. I thought it was that good. From my vantage point at the game, it looked like it would be distracting. I've never seen that done before. Do fans do that at other places?

Don't get me wrong, I like your idea, but maybe you should keep it all to one thread.

One of the things to consider regarding "distracting" the shooter of free throws, the shooter's eyes are focused on the rim, so looking through the backboard, the eyes will see the 20th-to-25th row of the section, not rows 1-10. That is where distracting spinners, rowdiness, surprise movements, etc. should be occurring.

At any dead ball, a coach can send a sub to the table to get in. So the stoppage really had nothing to do with it. Had it been a normal violation, Wookie would have sent his son to the table and made sure the officials knew he was coming in. No timeout necessary.

The paper thing was pretty cool.

The shot clock did NOT expire. The timekeeper reset it thinking that Wiggins' shot had touched the rim. If the refs had back up the play further, they would have seen that if 10.1 seconds were left of the play clock, time would have been left on the shot clock. I was able to stop the play and it showed 20.8 on the play clock and 12 on the shot clock. Since CU touched the ball before it went out of bounds, the ball should have been the Shocks with 1+ seconds left. Difference being, if we had thrown the ball toward our basket and the shot clock ran off, they would have gotten the ball under our basket, not at half court. If they had intercepted the pass, they would have had to call TO to get Dougie in the game.
