I think if SC offered the job to Dalonte Hill at K-State he would leave immediately and the rest of the current roster would follow him, leaving them with one scholarship player, Darren Kent, the 6-10 white kid whose other option was to walk on at UNI.

The coach was under contract through 2010. I believe his retiring was a surprise to most people. I don't believe HCGM wanted to sit around at Winthrop for another 3 seasons hoping he'd get the SC job.

Figures, just have to hope he isn't their top prospect and that they get their first choice.

You can bet Schaus will know before anyone though of what Marshall's intentions are. He will work hard to find a good replacement should it come down to that. Hopefully it won't though, cause even if Dean Smith were to come through the door recruiting is gonna be pretty weak for 2-3 more years...

A little financial info before HCGM goes running back to USC the first time they call. They ran a nearly 3 million deficit on a 46 million budget in 05-06. Additionally, what info do we have that USC gives a rat's ass about basektball. Fogler had a few good years there, but when have they ever been a baskrtball powerhouse, or ever paid a coach to take the program to great heights.

USC, loser as a 3 seed in 1998, coached by Eddie Fogler, ahhh, good memories!

Sadly, it might actually be like losing three recruiting classes in a row, since Turgeon's next to last recruiting class turned out to be somewhat of a bust.

Taking the job at South carolina is at best a small lateral move. It really is a step down. there you will always be second tier to Clemson. Sort of like K State to KU.

Now granted we do have challenges recruiting Kansas kids our selves *see Casey Crawford and Conner "Mark" Teahan* but you have to admit we done well for ourselves as compared to Kstate *save the last 2 years*

Outside of South Carolina being his home I just dont see him leaving. Granted that is a big factor hell a HUGE factor but I still dont see him leaving.

He COULD have...see Mark Turgeon when the KU job came open. But this was pretty much all anyone could have expected from Marshall. Sure we were hoping for more, but this was the realistic response unfortunately.

It makes me feel better that the SC press is talking about multiple candidates.

When GM took this job he said one of the reasons he took it seriously is that JS told him he was the #1 candidate. If they start interviewing multiple guys, and he doesn't feel the love, he may lose interest.

To me, it's all about timing.

Our last Head Coach would have loved the opportunity to coach at his alma mater. I don't believe he'll ever get that chance due to timing. He was in on the last round of hiring at KU, yet he wasn't "ready" to take that particular job. He had an offer to take the position at OU, yet turned down their offer after our Sweet 16 run. Then the Big 12 came calling again, and he couldn't refuse the offer. By doing so, he acknowledged that Bill Self is going to be at KU for quite some time (his dream job), and that due to timing, his chance at KU won't come around any time soon if ever.

Same goes for our current head coach.

                          The timing just ain't right.

Turg wanting to go to his alma mater (Kansas) is a little different than HCGM coaching at his alma mater, which are Randolph-Macon College and the University of Richmond. I think HCGM would be the #1 choice for both of those jobs. :good:

GM could have said everything the worry-warts want to hear, and it still would not stop them from worrying.... because it (those words) would not stop him from going to SC, IF, he desired to do so and was/is offered.

And we all know, that at best, those words would only be good for a year at the most. Someone else could always come around next year.... just like it happened with Turgeon, and just like it happened with Roy Williams at KU, and just like it happens at schools all over the country....

People need to chill out, and drop this madness, before he leaves just to get away from all of this crap....

                                He simply could have said,

"I am not and will not be a candidate for the head coaching position at South Carolina."

That still leaves him some room to go there if the coach the end of hiring doesn't work out.
