It wasn't what I'd hoped he'd say, but alas, his job is not to please me or any other fan. It would've been nice for a more definitive statement, but I guess it's time to move on for the sake of the team this year and for our own sanity.

If coach eventually leaves there's not a darn thing we can do about it. Let's get back to being SHOCKER fans and not just Marshall fans.

Gregg Marshall, he's the man who's name you'd love to touch! But you mustn't touch! His name sounds good in your ear, but when you say it, you mustn't fear! 'Cause his name can be said by anyone!

There are basically two ways coachs get raises. One is to make a good run in the Dance and the other is to be considered for another job. As much as I would have liked GM to make a definitive statement that he was removing himself from any consideration for the SC job, it just wouldn't make any business sense for him. I have no idea if he'll still be here next year and I sure don't enjoy the suspense, but when you have a good coach, that's the way it is.

          ;-)
He did close the door on the speculation..... at least for the rest of the season.
How does one "close the door on speculation?" Unless, by "closing the door" you meant closing the door and keeping all the speculation in the room. In which case, he did "close the door."
You close the door on speculation by making a definitive statement. Such as, If asked to interview for the SC job, I will refuse. Because I do not want the SC job. Door closed.
Lets say he did say that. What happens if in 5 years the SC job opens back up and he's ready to move on, but they don't look at him because he already said he didn't want the job? He'd be costing himself hundreds of thousands of dollars and possibly a lifetime dream of coaching SC. Just because you want him to say something so you can sleep better at night doesn't mean its in HCGM's best interest for his future.
BA, you assume to much. Or you didn't read my initial post. It has nothing to do with what I want CGM to say, and everything to do with what I thought he would say. As I stated in another thread, over the years I've seen a number of coach's come and go. So I can assure you, no matter what happens with CGM, I'll sleep just like I always do: GREAT.
          And:
You can't actually believe that if SC needs a new coach in five years, and CGM has a great record here, say 150-10, that SC would not want to interview CGM just because he was not interested five years earlier. NO WAY. SC would be back with a smile on there face to offer CGM the moon and stars.

I wouldn't go that far saying they are second to Clemson. Clemson came on strong last year and but since '99-'00 season hasn't exactly lit the world on fire. Their win total since '99 is 12, 12, 13, 15, 10, 18, 20, and 25 with three NIT appearances. I'm failry certain SC has had either the same or better success than Clemson during that span of time. At this point, IMO they are comparable programs.

He coulda said, that the time is not right. That as much as he would entertain the idea someday, that he was not and would not be, a candidate for the SC job this year.

That is what I hoped to hear. What I expected is what we got.

I disagree. It says "Leave me alone." It does not say "I will not accept the USC job if it is offered to me."

I preferred Bob Lutz's "statement" in the paper today.

At this point everything is nothing but rumors and speculation. USC isn't going to talk to any coach until the season is over. Marshall only had to release a statement because so many Shocker fans are hyper sensitive to the issue and were wigging out already. I'd also be surprised if any school allowed USC to talk to their coach in the middle of the season.
None the less, this might adversely affect our recruiting.

We are already full with SIGNED recruits. Coach is still recruiting for 1 or 2 more players to cover any contingencies such as Gal going pro in Israel, and/or another player not coming back for some reason. Those players are committed unless GM leaves.

It can't hurt us if he stays, only if he leaves; then it could be extremely painful, but listening to GM talk about the recruits we have coming already, I think he is very excited about the future...

He restated his committment to building Shocker basketball to level of excellence we all expect. And frankly he would be stupid not to consider future opportunities if it would be a better situation for him and his family. He did noting more or less than anyone here on this board would do regarding their own careers. Today and for the forseeable future his job is being the head coach at WIchita State. In contrast, let's face it, if he loses the rest of the games this season, this board and many Shocker faithful will be calling for his head.
I'm not very impressed with your statement.

For example, I expect WSU to lose the rest of its games this year and I want Marshall to stay. We all know this will be a bad year for the Shocks.

As for GM's willingness to remove his name from consideration, just remember Jim Larranaga.

                              • I have nothing but the utmost respect for our coach and from all I have read concerning the comments of those of you who know him, he is a most honorable man.

Saying that, I am also very sure that he is a most intelligent and astute man as well. Since there is little doubt in our minds, there can be little doubt in his mind of the damage he would do to the basketball program of this school if he leaves us in the lurch after only one year.

Certainly first and foremost is providing for a man's family. However, I think most of us would generally agree that this is not really in question considering that he has a signed 10 year contract for at least $750,000 per year. Establish a winning program and it will grow in leaps and bounds.

It is all speculation as to whether he will be offered the job. If it does reach that stage, in my opinion, it all comes back being honorable. After one year, does he dump his players, the school, the AD, and the fans who unconditionally welcome him into the fold and walk?

If it comes to this, he will have a very tough choice to make and one which will forever define his tenure at WSU. But then again, maybe us fans are the only ones who give a damn. I hope not.
