Students? Whoever said anything about students?

Incredibly hard pass. 6'8", 195. This year his FG% and 3FG% were both 0.0%. Looks like he only got mop up minutes and may have not even taken a shot this year

                      Serious question…

is that just D1 players, or does it include D1, D2, D3, NAIA, High School JV…so forth?

Every school employs outside counsel to opine on school-related things. It's not a college's law school's job to do so, nor does it give any college with a law school a leg up any more than a school with a strong economics department has a leg up on investing its endowment.

Law schools are there to teach law students how to learn the law. That's the law professors' specialty. That they once practiced law as practicing attorneys is hilariously inapplicable, especially when you are talking about ever-evolving areas of law such as this. The practice of law--particularly, the ins and outs of following NCAA regulations--is better done by practicing attorneys who specialize in that esoteric niche of law. That's why every school will use such counsel; that's why colleges with law schools do not have a leg up.

Your argument is additionally unsound because, even if a college with a law school utilized its law school for legal advice on NCAA issues, how does that give it a leg up? Colleges without a law school simply send the same email to the law firm they utilize at the .com email address instead of Professor Lawguy at the .edu email address.
The truth will set you free. But first, it will piss you off.

I fully understand that law schools are not there for the purpose of providing counsel to the school, nor in the normal course of business would they. Sheesh.

Now given school A which has a law school, and school B which does not ...

Which school has a larger general counsel? A or B? I recognize that the difference may be resources due to school size disparity, but I have stated that and that is part of my point.

Which school is more likely to have general counsel that specializes in athletics issues specifically? A or B?

Which school employs lawyers on their general counsel that attended their own law school? A or B?

Which general counsel is more passionate about making sure their school sports program thrives, the general counsel at A several of which attended sporting events at A as an undergraduate, or the general counsel at B that has only a professional relationship with the athletic department? A or B?

Which school will have a more stringent vetting process for their general counsel? A or B?

                              • Kung I think you’re overthinking this. A lot of the factors you mentioned don’t affect the quality of the legal counsel a given university receives one way or the other, and in some aspects (using a firm just because of the connections or relationships) may actually be a detriment.
