      • Is it an omen that there are 23 finalists?
"I not sure that I've ever been around a more competitive player or young man than Fred VanVleet. I like to win more than 99.9% of the people in this world, but he may top me." -- Gregg Marshall 12/23/13 :peaceful:

        • ‘Words not adequate to express’ pride in Van Vleet

When Fred Van Vleet and the unbeaten Wichita State Shockers made the cover of Sports Illustrated, some people may have been surprised. Don’t count Van Vleet’s former coach at Auburn, Bryan Ott, among them.

“Nothing he does surprises me. He is driven to be great, and he has been blessed by God with talent and ability that no one could have ‘taught’ him,” Ott wrote in an email Friday. Van Vleet and the Shockers head into Saturday’s game against the Drake Bulldogs with a 28-0 record. (Update: The Shockers won that game 83-54, making their record 29-0.)

The editors at SI have known of Van Vleet’s talent for a while. In a Feb. 5 article, Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall was quoted: “Not too many people want to win more than me, and Fred Van Vleet may be one of those guys.”

Ott wrote a similar thing about Van Vleet’s incredible work ethic: “Fred was and is a student of the game, an athlete who has worked harder to hone his craft than any other I have ever had the privilege to work with.”

            • Come March, the point guard is the most important position in college basketball. Take a look at the last four national champs. In 2013, Louisville had Peyton Siva. In 2012, Kentucky had Marquis Teague ...

              • And to think that Doug "The Tool" Gottlieb says that Fred is the weak link of our starters, thinking he's too slow and short. Thinks the big school points will make him nervous. I don't think Dougie has seen enough of our Fred, but he's so arrogant and dismissive it makes me puke. Fred is the real deal, I told my son last year that Fred was the real deal, and he has proven me right. Gottlieb couldn't carry Freds dirty jock, he's not worthy

Yup. I have a feeling Doug is going to look like one sad, stupid little man come tournament time.

Fred + slow and short = Winner and undefeated.
Dougie + ignorant and stubborn = Loser and stupid

Dick Gottlieb is all bent out of shape because the Shox are better than any team he ever played for and the Shox have a So PG who's better than any PG on any team Gottlieb ever played on. Maybe he thinks that if he denies that often enough people will stop believing it.

If Baker is from Iowa, then Gottlieb's first name is Dick. That's as close to accurate as he gets. Actually, it's quite a bit closer. Thanks, Kirstie.

                          • After watching the Shocks scrimmage this past summer, I witnessed a big improvement of FVV and was assured he would be a solid quaterback for us this Season and lead our team. However, even so, I had no idea he would play this consistent this very Season already which is a big reason we are 30-0. He was describing himself recently and as I paraphrase it, he said "I am not a drag racer but play at my own speed to get the job done." Again, that was not his exact words but that was the jest of it which is very true. He is one of the very best point guardd right now in the Country and most experts would easily have him ranked anywhere from 1-5 in the Country right now. Would you be willing to trad FVV and Baker for any other two guards that play on another team in the Country? Not me and they are only Sophs.

                            • I think this is a reasonably conservative opinion, and not too discolored by the black and yellow bi-color glasses.

I think VanVleet is among the top 3-5 PG's in D1. I think Baker is among the top 5-7 SG's - when he's healthy. Playing on a sprained ankle - he didn't look quite that good.

VanVleet and Baker are one of the top (if not the top) guard combos - and they're So's.

Then there's the undersized Cotton at SF. The problem with an undersized SF is that from time to time they're going to have to defend 6'8" or 6'10" guys at the rim. Or maybe they will find themselves with the ball at the rim going against a 6'9" guy. It's kinda fun when your 6'2" guy stuffs their 6'8" guy or their 6'10" guy - he's done both. It's also kinda fun when your 6'2" guy absolutely posterizes a 6'9" guy with an SC highlight dunk that really should be called a slam.

                              • Mr. Cotton received a hi-karate kick that all but 3 people that were watching did not seem to see initially versus Illinois State. Did he get up and want to fight? Naa, he jumped up, kept playing until the other 3 watched the hi-karate kick and finally called it. It seemed like we were down around 7 points with under 40 seconds but yet kept our composure and won a big game at a vital time that was a gift that just kept on giving. I really appreciate how players here develop and improve their game under the Marshall regime. Mr. Cotton is one such prime example of that Shocker dynamic.
