The manageable buyout being the key. But perhaps that doesn't kick in until the end of the 3rd year. And make it in incentive laden contract.

    • Would you rather keep IB and assure that our team stays together, or bail and get a new coach and lose a lot of players?

      I really, really really really

Really dont want to lose TE and RCIV.

But seriously, if we make the tourney and finish top 3 in AAC, how in the hell do we not give IB a chance to play this out?

What if he is the Ron Baker of the coaching world?

      • While I'm starting to move into the IB fan club, I remember Gary Thompson going to a F4 after moving from assistant to head coach. I suspect IB is a better recruiter than Thompson was.

It may not be this year, but if we keep the players, we finish top 3 in the AAC and we make the tourney. Assistants always sign one year contracts, so the fact that Kennedy's contract expires in June doesn't mean anything. Kennedy's Parkinsons probably means he's not likely to be getting or looking for HC jobs.

Having an experienced and successful former HC on the bench goes a long way to avoid problems a new HC might encounter.

It's a pick your poison deal. Behind Door 1, there's an unproven head coach with a team that can make the tourney. Behind door 2 is a coach with proven D1 success looking at a possible rebuild if he's hired.

Missing the key piece of information.... Who are we hiring INSTEAD of IB? The better he does this year the smaller the list of acceptable candidates becomes...

            • Best possible scenario is hiring Jans and retaining IB as head assistant with a massive raise to keep him happy, have him stay for at least a year or 2 so we don’t get crushed with transfers.

              • If IB proves to the powers that be that they believe he can win, recruit and elevate the program that's fine. If he's hired solely on the fear of losing current talent, that's short sighted and dumb. I don't hate IB. I wouldn't hate IB going forward. I have more faith in Jans currently. And I'm not going to lie, Griffen is also an intriguing prospect considering his connections and experiences.

Regardless of how this season goes, I think the AD needs to cover all of his bases before doing anything.

Griffen has high level coaching experience. Penny had never coached above HS. Griffen has been talked about as a great X's and O's guy. Penny rolls the ball out.

They are not the same. They are not even similar outside of having played in the NBA.

Griffen has no college experience. There is a big difference between NBA assistant and college HC.

Not near as big as the difference between HS/AAU and high level college.

Remember when Notre Dame hired Gerry Faust as their Head Football Coach because he had a high school record of 173-28, with 4 high school mythical National Championships? That was a joke too, and a mistake. This is a comparison to Penny.

A closer comparison would be Juwan Howard at Michigan. No college experience, but several years of experience with the Miami Heat.
