Positive Thoughts For Dex

I've played straight-up blues. I've played blues/rock. I've played jazz/blues. I was invited to play and sing at the creation of the Wichita Blues Hall of Fame.
I played the Allman Brothers version of Stormy Monday and have done that version behind probably half a dozen female singers. I played with a drummer who had played with Herbie Hancock and Oscar Peterson. That drummer was a white guy.
The race card has already been played in this thread, so it doesn't bother me to say that the two white guys who played at the gig for the creation of the Wichita Blues Hall of Fame were me and the bass player I played with. That bass player was invited to play with most of the people being inducted into the Wichita Blues Hall of Fame. The black guys being placed in the Blues Hall of Fame had no problem asking a white guy to sit in with them. If they had made an album, they would have wanted the white guy on the cover.
Anybody who's followed blues in Wichita from its heyday would remember Johnny Harris and Artie Hicks. Those were good friends of mine and I sat in with them regularly at Bill's Le Gourmet. The memorial for Artie brought Johnny back from San Diego and brought in musicians from Kansas City for one of the best blues/jazz gigs EVER in Wichita at the former Lettuce location.
Now, back to the subject, but this isn't going to be real positive.
Dennis. Left. The. Team.
I really hope "the team" has an understanding of why he left, believes he had legitimate reasons for doing that, and will accept the fact that he got some free time that the rest of them would have loved to have, but gave that up to be a part of "the team".
It can be really difficult for "the team" to accept players who don't have to follow the same rules the rest of them follow. I hope that, if Dex returns, the rest of the players understand his situation and accept that he needed something they would have liked but didn't do.
He hasn't entered the portal, so it's likely he's coming back. Basketball has been (probably) the thing he relied on for placing value on his life and somehow that went away. That's a lot for someone 19 to deal with.Last edited by Aargh; December 31, 2019, 01:40 AM.The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

Somewhere in the bowels of the National Endowment for the Arts, there is a copy of me doing a cover of The Fabulous Thunderbirds, "Wait on Time".
That song starts with a count. I counted 1-2-3. Drummer evidently heard 123 and stared at warp speed. I played a kinda trashy Texas-influenced lead, but I had never played it at the speed the drummer started. I actually hit the notes in the lead. There I was, a white guy playing a blues/rock at warp speed at a ceremony introducing the best blues guys Wichita has ever known into our local Hall of Fame.
There were a lot of - let's call them questioning looks - in the audience, but the front row, which had the guys going into the Hall had huge grins and were loving it.

We all hope he gets through whatever it is, but we can also agree it's also highly unusual to take a sudden leave of absence the day before a big game.Last edited by Kel Varnsen; December 31, 2019, 09:45 AM."In God we trust, all others must bring data." - W. Edwards Deming

Well, if Dex doesn't return to class for the Spring semester, that's probably about as long as it can go.
At least this all brought us the last great debate of the '10s, where a bunch of old (and I'm presuming white) dudes sit around on a baskeetball forum debating on what's blues and what's jazz and what isn't either of those. The truth will set you free. But first, it will piss you off.

If basketball is not that high of a priority for him right now, then so be it. Do what's best for you, Dex. It would suck because he oozes tons of potential and is a huge asset to our team when his head isn't cloudy. I respect whatever he does. But I do agree the longer it takes for a decision, the higher the potential for issues for both parties.Deuces Valley.
... No really, deuces.

Might he skip the spring semester and begin school and basketball next fall??"I not sure that I've ever been around a more competitive player or young man than Fred VanVleet. I like to win more than 99.9% of the people in this world, but he may top me." -- Gregg Marshall 12/23/13 :peaceful:

Remember when Nancy Pelosi said about Obamacare:
"We have to pass it, to find out what's in it".
A physician called into a radio show and said:
"That's the definition of a stool sample."

It's hard to weigh in with an opinion not knowing what his issue is but if he isn't back ready to go by 1/4 my guess is
he ain't coming back. It would seem that whatever it is it has negatively affected his game and his confidence and if he
hasn't recovered from it by now it's probably not going away anytime soon. Like the rest of you I hope he returns very soon
but only if he has his head on straight, otherwise, his return could be detrimental to both himself and the team. Again, I hope
he is back TODAY with a new positive outlook and ready to rumble but I am having my doubts. My gut tells me he will
transfer closer to home. Whatever his decision I hope it works out the best for him. My gut also tells me that if he still has
NBA ambitions he realizes that with our balanced team he won't ever be able to put up the numbers to get the attention needed
for that. I KNOW I am going to get hammered for that remark but I'll risk it. Hoping that point is moot with his return in the next
couple days. Go Shox
