Typical Shox homer. Can't you enjoy the fact that the refs aren't blowing the whistle? You should have watched the USC-Mamphis game last night. Two big time programs with All-World athletes. There were more collisions in that game without whistles than I'd ever seen. It was great. It was the most entertaining 50 point game I have ever seen. Not one of those Southern Illinois-WSU, whistle-infested pieces of trash. The game went into overtime and Memphis had only taken 10 FTs with 3 minutes left in OT. It's great. The refs don't ruin the game like they ALWAYS do in the MO Val. You and all other Shocker fans need to appreciate when the refs swallow their whistles. It makes for a much better product.

I got railed on this board for suggesting Mekel benched. That was during Game 1 of the season. Now you are all tooting my horn. Hell, Royal Shock almost booted me for similar comments. Why aren't you threatening these people like you did me? Oh, because they are right in their opinions. Just like I was 3 weeks ago.

Anyways, benching Mekel is the best thing that can happen to him. The sad part is that his defense is worse than his ball handling. How is that even possible?
you must not be one of his favorite posters? he doesnt give respect to anyone who doesnt have more then 1000 posts.

I watched the game and I completely disagree with you. Gal's turnovers were very annoying but some of his passes were great and overall he makes the team better. Matt gets a layup because of a great pass from Gal (on a play they obviously had planned). Gal needs to quit turning the ball over; we know this, Marshall said it after the game and Gal knows it.
Some posts are not visible to me. :peaceful:
Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.

          • Great game / this team is making huge strides. I have my doubts about MG or Ellis bringing anything to the table this year, but i would love to be wrong. It was nice to see the shockers come back early and completely control the game from that point on. There have not been many games in the past against a quality offense that the Shockers have pulled this off.

for full disclosure: I like what Gal can do -

I think Gal was a little unlucky with the last three turnovers.

The first of the three was the offensive foul for his push off of the BMC defender after said defender had reached in. While not a "bad" call, I think it is a call that most often results in no whistle and sometimes is called against the defense.

The second was the travel while penetrating the lane. He got the ball with less than 7 seconds on the clock and had to force the play. On top of this he was tripped from behind by a defender he had beat.

The third turnover was his final carry call. The ref and I had a similar line of sight of the play and there was no way for the ref to actually see the ball and hand. I thought Gal made the move too quick to be a carry, but I am sure the official had no real idea either. I guess his obvious carries earlier in the game do not allow an official to question his instinct to make the call.

The previous turnovers were all on Gal and 4 would have been too many/obviously 7 is awful.

Along the same lines does anybody think Coach Marshall wanted WSU to break the press with the cross court pass? Gal had a really bad turnover on his attempt, but following his pass PJ and Matt both made the same passes and both were almost picked off. It got me thinking Coach saw something there and the players were unable to execute.

              11. Despite Gal's problems, the Shockers only had 13 turnovers and 15 personal fouls. This kind of play makes my eyes glisten.
I like that lineup and would love to see it, provided it doesn't mess up the rotation for subs... we see a noticeable drop off when the starters are not in. I have complete faith in HCGM and if he thinks he can make that lineup work, I have no doubt that he will try it, when and/or if the timing is right.

I think Gal could learn some things watching from the bench. I like Gal and still think he will be a great player, but he has just as much responsiblity as every other player to play the game right.

              • What's the exact rule on carrying the ball? I'm hoping sub can help. What Gal does is simliar to what Sean did, being that he uses a high dribble to bring the ball to what looks like a pause when he makes his move. A lot of refs don't call that a carry instead only calling the ones in which the hand starts on the bottom of the ball and comes over the top (simliar to the hand signal).

Last night, all the way up the court, #2 on UMBC was bringing the ball side to side and pretty much having it pause on both sides as he made his moves. To me there is no difference between that and what Gal does, but it never got called. Sub you there with the rule?

                  • Carrying the ball is simply when the dribbler's hand goes 'under' the ball. You really see it called a lot more since it be came a 'point of emphasis' a year or two ago. It seems like they are trying to get some of the street ball aspects out of the game. It just seemes like every official knows they need to make that call once a game to meet their quota or something, so you just kind of randomly get the call at some point in every game.

                        • The key point in a carry, I believe, is not the position of your hand on the ball necessarily, but that you have a "momentary" pause while dribbling the ball.

Of course, the lower your hand is on the ball your chance of having such a momentary pause no doubt increase.

The question of how much a pause makes it a carry is purely judgemental and will probably vary from referee to referee.

The thing with Gal in the UMBC game is that he did not adjust to how this crew was calling it, and then I think every time he had the ball in the second half the crew was starting to look for and perhaps even antiicipate his tendency to carry the ball making his moves.

HCGM did not dispute the calls agaisnt Gal and it was not an issue for any of the other players. Gal explains it as a habit he has develoeped. HCGM said, it's a bad habit that needs to be broken.

Gal tends try to go for the home run on every possession and he occasisonal connects, unfortunately, his strikes outs are pretty high as a result of swiinging for the fences.

I think Gal will adjust and will continue to be a valuable contributor this year. With the guards we have coming in next year he has no choice if he wants his PT to continue to be significant.

                              • FYI:

                                Palming (Illegal Dribble).
Since there has been no significant reduction in the frequency of illegal movements while
dribbling the ball, palming the ball is once again a point of emphasis.
                                a. "Palming" or "carrying" the ball places the defensive player at a distinct disadvantage
while according the dribbler a sizeable advantage inconsistent with the spirit and
intent of the rules. The dribbler, who during a high or hesitation dribble, causes the
ball to come to rest and then pushes or pulls the ball either to the side or in front of
him commits an indefensible violation which must be called.
                                b. "Palming" is an illegal maneuver. When the ball comes to rest in
the dribblers’ hand, by rule, the dribble has ended. Continuing to dribble after the ball
has come to rest in the hand is a violation and must be called.
