  • Mark Standiford has had Tabor College in the top-10 of NAIA all season - again. He's been doing that consistently.

For what Butler is getting paid, Eric Wedge might have fit into the conversation.

It just really seemed (at the time Stephenson was replaced) that if Kemnitz was staying, things would go most smoothly if a Stephenson-era player were hired. I don't know if any would have accepted.

I know we've had 2 key pitchers injured, but Stephenson wasn't losing games because of a lack of pitching, the pitching coach hasn't changed, Butler is losing games because of a lack of pitching. Something isn't working, and that something was predictable.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

I can't say whether or not, Standiford, Wedge or Hooper would have accepted the job, but I feel I can say on very good authority that PJ Forbes would have accepted.

I believe that the only pitcher left on staff that was recruited under Gene is Sam Tewes.

My opinion is Mark Standiford would have been proud to have accepted the job, coaching for a school and community that he loves. His family and friends would have been huge supporters both financially and physically. Rich traditions would have been saved, cherished and honored. Congratulations to Mark for being named NAIA National Coach of the Year!

Mark is a heck of a coach, and my understanding is he's a great recruiter too. Some people don't always like his attitude, but I've never had a problem with him. I have no doubt he could have done good things at WSU, and maybe he'll get that chance once somebody wises up and realizes Butler was a huge mistake of a hire.

I agree with your opinion. I just don't know him personally or know someone very close to him to be able to say that I know that he would have taken the job.

Ashford and Biechler were Mean Gene recruits. If you look at the class that these guys were in for Gene (which incude Tewes) - lots of misses.

                • None of Gene's players will get hired while that jack wagon Sexton is there. I think he takes pride in destroying his legacy.

                  • Other than Loren Hibbs and Travis Wycoff, how many former players have successful D1 coaching experience?

                    • An acquaintance of mine (our church youth pastor) played under Standiford at Tabor and had good things to say about him as a coach and recruiter.

                              • Stephenson’s coaching tree ranges from Eric Wedge, who managed the Cleveland Indians and Seattle Mariners, to Southern Illinois-Edwardsville assistant Danny Jackson. Mark Standiford is building an NAIA power at Tabor College. Loren Hibbs, a former player and assistant, took over at Charlotte in 1993 after helping Stephenson build his national power. Arnie Beyeler is first-base coach for the Boston Red Sox and Kevin Hooper is in his sixth season managing the Wichita Wingnuts. Phil Stephenson, Gene’s brother, completed his ninth season at Dodge City Community College.

WSU’s 2014 media guide lists 16 former Stephenson players and assistants now in coaching and there may be more.
