I know for me it is so hard to let go of how dominant we were, both in the Valley as recently as the 5-7 years ago, and nationally like the glorious years from the late 80s to mid 90s. We have sputtered since those two super regional years, and this year it feels like we are on the side of the road fixing flats every mile. I am still hopeful things will get better, but in order for me personally to believe it, we need to at least be battling for the Valley title next year and hopefully winning it the year after that.

I forgot to mention that MK told us at the tailgate party last night that WSU Baseball attendance is the best it's been in 4 years.

That's most certainly paid attendance, not butts-in-seats. Season tickets being sold for 15-30% of normal pricing might help paid attendance stats just a bit.

Before we can predict whether or not we have a shot of competing for a Valley title next year we will need to wait and see how the Shocks are impacted by the MLB draft.

Kihle, Tinkham, and Hilliard are all position players at risk. Maybe even Chase Rader. He was definitely slowed this year with that inner ear infection that he may just now be putting behind him. Wasn't he the highest rated of our Juco transfers.

On the pitching staff I would think John Hayes is definitely in play. Not sure about Willie Schwanke and Isaac Anderson. The will probably be back.

Furthermore we have quite a few highly rated incoming freshman recruits that may be in play in the MLB draft.

7 years. He is in year 2. I think his base salary is $300,000 per year. $1.5 million buyout for those of you wanting to buy him out now. Get out the old check books.

As a practical matter he will get at least 2 more years and more likely 3 more years before a buyout is even considered. No sense worrying about it at this point IMHO.

WSU Baseball Tradition

I think everyone who posts here is a great fan of WSU baseball because of what Gene Stephenson did to build it to high level. He is a legend. He just stayed about 5 yrs too long & then went through what turned out to be a very awkward exit for everyone concerned. Gillaspie last year was one of the few truly outstanding players that Gene recruited here in recent years. Gillaspie was from Nebraska, Now that the U of Nebraska is in the Big 10, they are mainly all cold weather schools that is not conducive to baseball in the spring. Todd Butler is recruiting from coast to coast now. People used to wonder if Gene St's recruiting budget was limited. Jim Schaus once assured me it was not.

I see what you are saying. For me, maybe next year would be better put as finishing in the upper half. I know the draft often makes for some serious recruiting scrambling.

And Brent. I believe Brent was the recruiting coordinator under Gene for many years and I am quite sure he was the primary recruiter of the pitching staff. How that is structured under HCTB I don't really know for sure.

I would really like to retire Gene S. discussion but from scuttlebutt that I heard, recruiting was not Gene's forte in his later years. He didn't get out very much. He limited recruiting to mostly on campus.
