I was thinking this exact thing today.butler has got some good players here.Just had some bad luck with Tewes and Schwanke going down.If the last couple of weeks are any indication,we are heading in the right direction and next year we may have something.

      • I was going to echo...if the past couple of weeks are an indicator, MAYBE the direction now is positive....

This team is certainly showing some improvement. If nothing else they simply are not giving games away the way they did earlier in the season. I am not going to get too excited about next year until we see how everything shakes out through the MLB draft.

          • Believe it or not this Shocker team actually has a shot at finishing 3rd this year. A long shot they would need to win 2 of 3 at DBU and they would need MSU to sweep Bradley which is a definite possibility with MSU's pitching.

OTOH, they could fall to 5th as well. A tie for 4th with Illinois State, who hosts Indiana State, may be the most likely outcome.

The great advantage of finishing 3rd is that you would be in DBU's half of the bracket. Finishing 4th or 5th likely puts you in MSU's bracket. MSU only needs 1 win against Bradley to clinch the #1 seed.

This year's format will divide the eight teams into two pods based on regular-season finish (Seeds 1, 4, 5 and 8; Seeds 2, 3, 6 and 7). Each four-team bracket will be a double-elimination format, with the winners squaring off in a one-game championship on Saturday evening.

            • Either way,MSU or DBU it's a long shot with our pitching depth.Bargfelt is likely pitching our second game and he's been a good freshman but he's not a true 2 that we need to advance past either team.

Yeah, both pitching staffs are terrific. Looks to me like MSU may have the edge over DBU in starting pitching and DBU has the better bullpen. I doubt DBU loses many games when they lead late.

I think a 2-2 showing by the Shocks in the Valley tournament would be about as good as one should expect.

                • I was listening to the Coach's show last night. Scott Gurss, the team's DOBO sat in for Coach Butler who was out recruiting. I though Scott did a very nice job.

Scott said that the difference between the MSU pitching staff and the DBU pitching staff is that the MSU starters, while capable of bringing the heat, they generally get you out with their secondary pitch and use more guile and finesse to get the job done. He said that pretty much the entire DBU staff were power arms that had no fear of challenging you with 90-95 mph hard stuff although they do have some guys with good sliders.

                  • Here is an encouraging piece from Sully, analyzing the season in thirds.

                    • Finished under .500 in conference and 7 games under .500 for the year. Looks like we will finish in 5th in the MVC due to tie breakers but a tie for 3rd based on our record. Luckily this team finished VERY strong otherwise there would be a lot to be concerned about. I think I feel the best I possibly can after watching us struggle the first 40 games of the year. I am looking forward to the tournament and think we will do ok but being on the MSU side of the bracket will be tough for us to advance to the championship round even if we play really well.

There are still a lot of questions to be answered but I am about as anxious for next year as one can possibly be after a 24-31 season. It will no doubt be an interesting finish and very interesting to see who is back next year.

                        • Shox finish season 26-33. Worst ever since the program was revived from the dead by Gene in 1978. I don't believe the Butler can survive another sub .500 season next year.

I wonder what Mr. Sexton's expectations are for next year.

                            • We have two seniors this year. Is that a reflection at all of what Butler inherited? The bullpen and pitching in general has been mediocre and not what we're used to. Isn't that Kemnitz? Butler's had one recruiting class. I feel we're falling into power 5 football mentality: win now or leave. He needs a few more years.

                              • I wonder if there is a thread on the Blue Jay Underground titled "The flaming burning predictable disaster that is Shocker Baseball"?
An “Old West” Texas analysis and summary of Mueller report and Congress’ efforts in one sentence:

"While we recognize that the subject did not actually steal any horses, he is obviously guilty of trying to resist being hanged for it."
