  • I still don't know all of the facts, but this makes me feel even worse for Coach Jans. Yes, he did something stupid, but to get fired? It is well known across the country that typically coaches like to drink. Don't do it with coeds, get a cab, and now I guess you can add don't hit on the hot chick.

I honestly don't blame Bowling Green for doing what they did. Now can he be forgiven, yes, but actions come with consequences.
I agree. The standards for Head Coach are probably more stringent than an assistant. In either case, however, you'd get canned. But, if this is relatively minor but led to knee-jerk firing, he could return to coaching after the appropriate Mia Culpa and "sensitivity training."

      • If he said something inappropriate to the woman, he deserved to get slapped.

        Probably too much drinking.

        • All I can say is if he did something I think he should be fired for, I won't stand with him just because I liked him. However, if he did something I DON'T think he should be fired for, I will be thrilled if we can just take him right back and put this whole thing in the past. In some odd sense, it could be a huge irony/stroke of quasi good luck... But again that's ONLY if it turns out to be something that I disagree he should have been fired for.

I mean for an incident like that I could even see something like a public reprimand or something, but termination if this is a one time thing? I just don't think Bowling Green likes to win.
The report cited used the terminology "aggressively and inappropriately". What exactly was meant by that is anyone's guess.

Either way, this likely costs him multiple years on his climb up. He'll likely either be sitting out for a few years, or assistant coaching again. Then he'll have to go through the whole Bowling Green, first year, again elsewhere. It is not like he is Gregg level, and would basically just have to sit out a year and then go to Auburn or Colorado St. after people forget.

Agreed. He can make a comeback, but it won't be as a head coach. And honestly, he may never get that chance again.

Seems like those terms could be moving targets. The assistants were there; why didn't they intervene before slapping was needed? Perhaps they didn't see it as "aggressive and inappropriate"?

How long can Bama go without a coach?

                    • I think we should stop speculating. This matter will come to light very soon (think 1-3 days). If we truly care about Coach Jans, we must stop the gossip and focus our thoughts, prayers, and well wishes to he, his wife, family, and coaching staff. After all the assistants are now out of job based upon the behavior of their boss.

They certainly leave a broad spectrum of possibilities don't they.

The article even mentions the person there said it was a "brief" altercation. So, does the video just show him being helped out of the bar? Or does it show the slap? Or does it show what happened leading up to the slap. Seems like this is something he could recover from. Maybe not for 2015-2016, but he'll be back (to coaching, not sure about WSU).
Unfortunately, 2015-16 may have to be a timeout. I would like to see him back at WSU, but you can't run the risk of hiring someone back that quickly as it could be a PR nightmare and make a prospective employer appear to be insensitive to the issue of violence/abuse/aggressive behavior towards females. Not saying it couldn't be handled in an appropriate manner and land him somewhere sooner rather than later, but this is a very sensitive manner and needs to be dealt with in a manner that doesn't cause a firestorm for being insensitve.

So, Chris Jans and Gregg Marshall both goth their hands on enhanced packages recently?

                            • Universities are under huge scrutiny right now regarding sexual assaults which can include something as simple as a grab or a grope. Not a lot of choice in the matter from BGSU as far as I'm concerned

And it is imperative that his ability to effectively perform his duties, specifically recruiting can not be compromised. Regardless of what exactly he did the damage may have been done in that regard. You would have to expect it would be brought up by his competitors in the recruiting battles. Fair or not this is the practical aspect of this mess.
